Hi FP smile.gif

The Peache's that is in your siggy? Do you have a recent pic of him by chance?
Nenn
IPB Image I guess that's normal, but maybe the wen is so rare because it's not popular for ryukins to have.

not the most recent pic. but notice the 'bump' above the eyes.
froggydella
Yep, I see what your talking about--Looks pretty normal to me. Nothing I would worry about for sure. smile.gif He's cute! The "Bump" give's him some flair!

I read in another forum that bigger ryukins tend to have a slight wen growth. Apparently Tung Hoi now is producing a type of ryukin that has a bit of wen and would you believe, kinginrin scale! blink.gif
Man Yu
it's pretty common to see elderly male ryukins with a slight wen in the fish stores I frequent... that's probably how the wen trait started apperaing in early forms of goldfish in the first place

A few months ago I got some Ryukins from Thailand. Stock was said to be AAA Grade. The Red and Whites are beautiful specimens but the Calicos are far from being graded! They do have compressed bodies, but they also carry dermal growth on their head. sad.gif

oops, here's the pic -

I agree - the majority of mature fish seem to carry what is commonly refered to by judges as "a thickening" on their heads. This is actually more common than not.

JohnF:
I could be mistaken, but I would have sworn that's a calico oranda in the pic and not a calico ryukin...

Agree. With that much "thickening" on the head it's already into oranda territory.
JohnF
Yes I agree that they look like Orandas, and is a great disappointment since I've ordered Calico Ryukins (and paid good money!!).

Here is a closer shot of the same fish -

And these are 2 of the Red & White Ryukins from the same Thai wholesaler -

So it is possible that my fish have wens then!? Especially my comet, Angus, has a rounded head! It sure looks like some kind of wen! And he gets tiny white spots sometimes, like wen growth!

Sorry for hijacking the thread!
Peaches
Thanks. He is an older fish, about 5 inches. He is still growing too.
I have also noticed that my fantail has some 'thickening' like what daryl said.

JohnF, your fish could possibly be a ryukin oranda mix smile.gif

Anette, It is possible that your fish could have some headgrowth. Dont worrie about 'hijacking' any threads, or at least mine any ways smile.gif
btw, angus is very beautiful. love the bright red color!!

Since we are on the subject of ryukins with wens, I thought I would post a picture of Bob, an oranda that I had until about a year ago. As you can see, he would have been a ryukin if not for his wen.

It's very popular (at least in Thailand & Singapore as far as I know of) to have deep-bodied-humpy oranda. I myself think that they're very handsome and imposing compared to the usual non-humpy ones.

In the link are some pics of "humpy" orandas, especialy the red/white ones:

Man Yu
^here in the philippines too... mature specimens of compact and high-bodied orandas are common. But you really won't mistake them for ryukins
br553
I agree. The presence of a wen is a dead giveaway that it is an oranda. Until I got my oranda Bob, I didn't know orandas were as deep-bodied as that.

Angus is gorgeus! I was wondering the same thing Anette about comets having wens. Sweet Pea's head is roundish & a much darker red then the rest of her body. She too gets little white pimples that are def not ich which dissapear after awhile.

Too bad we live so far away Sweet Pea & Angus would have the cutest babies! biggrin.gif

I have a Tung Hoi "Blue Ryukin" which is really an Oranda/Ryukin cross! Can't wait to see if a wen appears later. smile.gif
