Full Version: What Is This On My Snail?!?

Ive been noticing these little white egg like things popping up in different parts of the tank and I had no idea what they were or where they came from. Then I watched my snail Posey and discovered she was producing them. I call her a she as she is a pinky colour. I actually thought she was a male.

Anyway. She left these white things on the side of the tank: not above the water line like they are meant to with eggs? She is also too small I would have though to be producing eggs. And they dont look that much like the eggs ive seen in photos from apple snails.

I know her shell isnt great and ive ordered some liquid calcium but what on earth are those white things? The goldies ate them!

The pics are blurry but they are perfectly rounded little white things.

Does the water line go all the way up to the top of the tank?
Are goldfish the only fish that you keep with this snail? They don't look like Apple Snail eggs at all. They kind of remind me of Cory eggs or something with the way that they're grouped..... headscratch.gif Strange.....

It goes fairly high up. But there would still be a small bit of a gap. This particular snail has managed to escape twice when the other never has. Once last week infact. She really isnt very big. She is infact the size of the picture that appears at the top of this forum.

And yep, only goldies. No other fish or inverts or anything else. They are definitely being made by her and come out in the same sort of way poo does. As opposed to just falling out of her shell or something. They come out in a mucus of some sort as they are grouped together.

blink.gif Well,I guess it's possible that she's a Juvi then and this is her first clutch, but it's all sort of confusing to me.I can see with how the eggs look, that it's very possible that the goldies may have been eating them or even the other snail, but this is the first time that I've seen them under water, and I've owned 100'2 and hundreds of snails. smile.gif idont.gif I guess that they are hers. biggrin.gif

It is all very odd isnt it? I might post the pics on apple snail.net and see what they make of it there.

Im pretty sure they are not poop because they are uniform in size and she has had no change in her diet whatsoever.

How small are the eggs that apple snails usually produce? These are really rather tiny.

Oh it's not poo---It's definately eggs-for sure.If this is her first clutch, and she's small,it's probably pretty normal that they're this small. The only difference is that they're usually laid all together in a group to almost look like a piece of honey comb.
Here are some different pics. I don't think Apple Snail will be able to add anything,,but if you wanna try,go ahead. smile.gif http://images.google.com/images?q=apple%20...ial&sa=N&tab=wi

They can lay hundreds in that clutch if it's a full one and they all hatch. blink.gif

Because the eggs are in the water though doesnt that render them duds?

Unfortunately that is true.

They're not eggs, her eggs will be larger and when first laid will look like white BBs and later change to a mass of peach cottage cheese-looking stuff. The eggs are so soft when first laid they would dissolve very quickly underwater. What are the nitrate levels in the tank? It actually does look like slimed poo, I've had a few of mine produce things like this whenever anything caused low levels of stress such as water temp changes or water params they didn't like. You can also ask at applesnail.net, there're plenty of people that've been in snails longer than I have that could give a more scientific explanation.
yazooo
They really do look so far from what ive seen as pics of eggs.

Nitrate is good. 5-10ppm.

HOWEVER at the time that this happened I was having a minicycle and ammonia did reach 0.25ppm. Which would explain stress (even though my pH and temp. are sufficiently low enough to render that kind of level fairly harmless).

As for the slime thing, they werent really slimey. Some of them bunched together but others didnt. There was also a uniformity in their size, not how faeces usually are when there are bits and pieces of different shapes and sizes. Its a shame that the pictures are blurry as they dont convey that particularly well.
