I heard ghost shrimp do ok in cool water. Even though ost use them as snacks, do you think I could put a few in my 46 gal with my goldies. I read that they take care of a little algae but aren't the best. I don't know of any other cool water shrimp, do you?

I bought 6 cherry shrimp and they were promptly picked off one by one by my comet who was only an inch and a half at the time. He would catch them, thrash them about and eat them in bits. Pretty gross but I guess good protein for him. They were not intended as food originally though.

Amano shrimp are about the largest ive seen though depending on the size of your goldfish I think eventually they would still try and eat them! Amano shrimp, according to various websites can be kept in temps of 23-27 degrees. (73-80).

I would definately say no to both Ghost and Cherry Shrimp for sure,as they are way too easy for goldies to munch on.One of the biggest Shrimp that I've seen,is the Singapore Wood Shrimp . Females get close to 3 inches or more ,males a bit bigger, but from what I've read ,they are sensitive to cold water, high pH, and high GH,and I've also read that they can live in a wide range of ph and hardness conditions from acidic to alkaline(preferring more acidic) ,so who knows???I know there have been a few people around here that have tried them, but I never did hear if they were successful with them. blink.gif

I know about wood shrimp because I am going to order one for my 20 gallon. Wood shrimp don't feed like other shrimp so the only algae they will only consume small particles of algae floating in the water. I'm ok with ghost shrimp getting eaten. I will of course keep them away from the goldies until I'm sure they haven't eaten anything or caught anything that they can pass onto the fish. I've done research and most sites say that they are kept as live food for fish, not exactly what I am want them for but as long as I know they are safe to eat. I'd like them to eat some of the algae that is hard for me to get to. Like on rocks or grooved decorations.

I have no luck with algae eating plecos so shrimp are really my only other solution since I can't get large snails here. You can't own apple snails in So. Cal. I went to a pet store and they told me that they can't sell them because too many people release them into the water which is against the law and causes major ecological damage. In fact no store around me sells any snails(except for salt water ones) and the only kind I've had are the pest type that come on aquatic plants. I think it is because I live right next to acres and acres of protected wetlands. sad.gif

At work we keep our ghost shrimp in the colder water, but they do of course get eaten if we're not careful. We keep them in with the rosey red feeders and even then some of the smaller ones get eaten. What type of goldfish do you have? We've kept the shrimp in with the fancies before and lost a minimal amount since the double tails move slower, so with a lot of cover some of them may survive.

I have 3 orandas and 1 pearlscale. Not the fastest goldfish for sure. In Fact Hyena is the only fast one. He is a baby, to small to get a whole one in his mouth.
