I know people say that goldies will eat duckweed and that they like it but is it ok to feed them it on a regular basis? I think some duckweed came with some riccia I ordered, but it might be frogbit. I can't tell for sure until it grows some more. If it starts growing and turns out to be duckweed I would like to give it to the goldies. Is it safe?

Haha goldies loooooove duckweed. I think it's cause they're small & easy to digest

biggrin.gif I have to agree with that. Not too long ago,I purchased a pound of Duckweed for my fish, and believe me ,it was quite alot. blink.gif Within a couple short days, the entire lot was gone and there were my fish pooing out big green poos! ignore.gif rofl3.gif They devoured it and didn't seem to have any probs because of it. smile.gif

i wonder if they grow fast, because of next year one month trip, i planned to put some duckweed along with other plants in my further pond, and hope my fish can survive on it and some insect larvae or eggs, is this possible?

Omg!!! They go berserk for duckweed!!!! When I lived in Northern California, I lived near a stream that naturally produced duckweed by the bucketsful. I had no idea what I bonus I had then! I miss that free duckweed....... Anyway, I had no idea that goldies liked it back then, but put some in my pond just as decoration. I had a 4'x6' pond and the duckweed covered the top of it and by the next morning, the duckweed was all but gone! mmmmmm.......

Lucky for me then that so far my oranda hates it! I just came home with a bunch for my 20 gallon. She chews it and then spits it right back out. smile.gif

I had a few (like, three) pieces of duckweed hitchhike in on some micro sword I ordered for one of my tropical tanks. I was hoping that it would spread out over the surface of that tank (20G tall hexagon) (it gives a nice, soft greenish glow to the water ^^), and it certainly has--to the point that soon I'm going to need to start taking some out so that the other plants will still get enough light.

I was hoping that that I could put that extra in my goldfish tank, so I'm glad to know that my fishies should enjoy it. biggrin.gif

The only concern I have is that they'll be eating it off the surface, and I'm a little worried about SBD from them gulping in air with the veggies. Do you think it could be a problem?

I spoke way to soon about my tiny terror oranda hating duckweed...Inhaled isn't even a relative term for what this little fish did to my duckweed & frogbit. I now have a little breeder net floating in my tank with some frogbit & duckweed which at the moment she is trying desperately to get into.

rofl3.gif That's too funny! I want duckweed, but have not been able to find it.

I swear its like watching Jaws...Before I knew he liked to hang out on the surface I had the water filled all the way to the black line of the tank...Until I saw his dorsal fin partially sticking out of the water! rofl3.gif It was like being back in South Africa with the Great Whites who love to feed on the surface. Needless to say the waterline is lower now and he's STILL trying to get at the duckweed even though he has a veggie clip full of lettus.

Mine hitchhiked in on some plants I ordered online (from http://www.liveaquaria.com ), however, I've also seen it at a tree/plant nursery near my house, in their pond section. They sell some koi and tadpoles (sometimes) and aquatic and semi-aquatic plants, and at least one or two of the setups always has duckweed all over the water surface.
