Full Version: Support Issues For Big Tank

We live in an old farmhouse. The 125-gallon tank we are about to set up will weigh over 1,000 US pounds!
Has anyone ever had to reinforce their house's foundations or support beams for such a heavy tank? The house does have a basement, which worries me because it is an old house after all. My boyfriend says, ah, don't worry about it. But that IS a lot of weight! I don't want the tank to fall through the floor!
Also, any ideas for sturdy, non-wood stands? Would bricks be a good idea?

is your basement floor made of cement or wood

I can understand your concern, and feel that the design of your tank-stand may play some part. In that I mean that if your stand has four legs, the weight has to be carried on each leg and each leg has only a small surface area. If however your stand is of the cabinet type, the surface area resting on the floor is not just concentrated on four small areas and therefore the weight is distributed more widely.( I hope I'm making sense) Perhaps if your stand has four legs it may be prudent to place it on a large piece of thick marine-grade ply wood. Perhaps your friend could fashion this into a water-proof tray in case of minor water spills! Is the floor of wooden construction, and how far are the floor beams apart?

It's a hrdwood floor, supported by (get this) actual tree trunks. That's how they did things back in the old days! but there are also a few metal support beams in the basement. The basement is dirt-floor. Not finished or anything, and the foundation is made of brick.

i live in a trailor.an im about to set up a 110gal tank,,i was worried about the same thing, so im in the prosses of building a stand for it.
to help spread out the weight instead of having it concentrated in a small section.,im gonna make the base wider then the tank an help displace the weight,an im also making the tank stand short to help reduce the weight from the stand.once i get it all together ill post pics if any one cares to see it

Sounds like a great place! I guess if you have the stand made sturdy enough, either out of timber or steel you should be okay. A sturdy stand would also lessen the risk of it twisting and as a result place strain on the aquarium glass. I am fortunate in that I have metal working and welding equipment at my disposal and as a result have build my own stands out of what we call "square tubing". If need be I guess a metal frame could be clad with timber to make it aesthetically pleasing.
