Full Version: Comet Do I Euthanasie Or Not?

My comet is nearly a year old, the first thing we noticed was swelling of the stomach which looked like constipation. It then developed a rupture in it's side and looked like it's intestine was slightly protuding. I thought it might be best to induce Euthanasia as it did not look like it was going to survive.
After reading up on the Euthanasia subject and purchasing the clove oil, my comet now appears to be healing but still has some disfiguration to both sides and what looks like blood spots.

My comet has always fed well through all this but stayed at the bottom of the tank. It's dorsal fin was down now it is up. He is now swimming happily but i am concerend about my other fish in the tank.
I do not want the sick fish to be in any discomfort or severe pain.

Fed on shelled peas, soaked pellets and own homemade fish food (recommended recipe on this site).

Please advise will my comet get better on it's own?
I am prepared to Euthanase my comet if there is little hope, however as it is now happily socialising again i am in doubt what is best course of action?. unsure.gif

Hi goldenfish and welcometo.jpg

The first thing to establish is how your water quality is faring so would you be able to answer as many of the questions in the white box as possible?

Then we can work out if it's tank size or water quality related smile.gif

Do you see any pus coming out of the wound?

I had to treat one of my work's pond fish a few weeks back with similar problem and fed it exclusively on medicated food and placed waterborne meds in the water. I think it needs meds to help resolve the problem and also isolation from your other fish, just until it's resolved.

He's now well and swimming merrily but it took time and a bit of work to achieve this as he needed 2 x 75% waterchanges daily and the meds needed to be replenished at each waterchange - this was to keep the ammonia as close to 0 as possible and then the meds took care of the rest. So depending on what your water is doing, you can have a shot of helping him through this smile.gif

Please post back soon smile.gif

Q Ph Level out of the Tap?
A ? Water is crystal clear. sorry I don't have this answer yet, but will endevour to get the answers posted tommorow asap.

Q Tank size (How many Gals) and How long has it been running?
A 66 gallons (300 litre) / 1 year

Q What is the name and size of the filter/s?
A Juwel / I disposed of the packaging but the filter and tank were integral, so I can assure you that it is adequate for the tank size.
Think its 400 Gal/hr. (filters are cleaned every day and replaced on a regular basis.)
Also twin aeration.

Q How often do you change the water and how much?
A 10% approx every 5 days

Q How many fish in the tank and their size?
A 8 comet 1 black moor all nearly a year old, so of a mature size.

Q What kind of water additives or conditioners?
A AQUARIUM PHARMACEUTICALS stress coat with aloe vera.
INTERPET fresh start.

Q Any medications added to the tank?
A yes INTERPET methylene blue. once approx five weeks ago.
(had to change water of tank over a period of two weeks). Sketchy as I've lost the instructions but I think this is right from memory:
starting with a 60% water change after 3 days then subsequent water changes until the blue had gone.

Q Add any new fish to the tank?
A One new fish approx 3 months ago. This fish developed (or had from new), ICK - hence the methyl blue treatment

Q What do you feed your fish?
A Fish pellets - soaked for 5 mins..
Frozen peas, cooked and shelled.
Homemade fish food made from a recipe reccomeded from Koko's web site. (They can't get enough of the stuff!)
Occasional fruit i.e. Grape, watermellon (again as recommended)

Q Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt",
A No

Q bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus?
A Yes, The same fish had blood streaks on the tail (Like a bruise, this has nearly cleared now)

Q Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, ect..?
A Staying at the bottom of the tank
Dorsal fin flat
Lethargic until food is added to the tank, then becomes pushy and greedy like the rest of the fish. Dorsal fin picks up and swimming is powerful again

I hope this helps you a bit more. Nitrate levels etc. I will get when the shops open in the morning
As I'm in the UK. Time differences apply....
