Full Version: Hermie's Getting A Tank!

My "pest" snail Hermie is getting a tank as a belated Christmas gift (right now he lives in a very small bowl), and I'm wondering where you would find one of those itty bitty sponge filters that you see when people have those tiny all in one tank kits. I've looked at my LFS, but I haven't found any.

The tank I bought him was a 1.5 gallon critter keeper type thing, and will be delivered in another week or so.

Also, if anybody wants an update on the pest snail status... he did start laying eggs all over his bowl in neat little clutches that looked a bit like tapioca, which I cleaned away. No eggs were given the opportunity to hatch, he has grown quite a bit since he became my pet. He is still the solitary inhabitant of his bowl, and about a week ago stopped laying eggs entirely. His favorite food seems to be the goldfish flakes that used to give my goldfish constipation before I stopped using them, so maybe in a billion years they'll be used up. He also dines on zucchini, cucumbers, peas, an occasional sliver of algae wafer and once in a while I drop a piece of progold in there.

The plant he came on is long dead, it didn't survive three days, but the snail lives on.

Have you checked online for those sponge filters? Seems like Ive seen them before. Check bigalsonline.com. Yay for Hermie getting a bigger home! smile.gif

I don't know where you live, but I got one of those filters at Wal Mart. It's super cheap and does the job, I used it in a critter keeper for years with my newts.

It's so nice of you to keep the little snail and get him his own tank rather than poison him or mush him heartpump.gif Hermie is a lucky snail!

I'll take a look next time I am there, if I can find one I'd prefer to purchase it locally rather than have to pay shipping on something that should be under $5, but our local one honestly sucks the big one. They never have any live fish other than an occasional betta, and they rarely have things as basic as thermometers and airline tubing. They don't even sell heaters there. They have half of one aisle devoted to fish, and over half that aisle contains extremely large tank kits and horribly small kits that aren't appropriate for fish.

Awe thanks. When I originally posted here, I just got a bunch of people telling me to kill him, so I've been hesitant to post again. But I'm really happy with my little snail. He's doing good, and become a part of my aquatic family. He doesn't get to play with the rest of the family. If he stops laying eggs for good, I might find him a larger tank and a few fish or other snails which won't eat him.

Hermie got his tank, he didn't get a filter, I tried wal*mart, petsmart and petco, no luck with a sponge filter. So I may end up getting one from bigalsonline, but not sure. I've got the tank crammed pretty full of plants, and he's having a ball climbing on them, kind of hate to ruin that by taking one out to make room for a filter. I think I'll just stick with really big water changes every week.

But I have pictures!

With all the gravel and the decorations and leaving the water down a little bit, the tank holds about a gallon of water.

Anybody have any suggestions about what I could call his new home? I like to name all my tanks.
