Alright guys, I made it back to NY late Wednesday night. I knew some things were going on with some of my goldies but didnt know the extent of it until I got home. My pearlie, Hiro, is laying on his side, bloated. He is also splotched with red spots. Septicemia? I have him in a 10 gallon with Maracyn 1 and 2 right now. Poor thing is still hanging on. Ive expected to find him dead 2 mornings in a row now. (I'm sorry Fred!!)
2nd problem is I have a ranchu with a big sore on his back. His scales are gone and its almost a perfect circle. Could it be bacterial? He eats fine and acts like his normal self.
3rd is I have a ryukin who hides behind a log all day, just comes out to eat. I assume that the water quality is the issue with this one. Before I got back, nitrAtes were off the chart. I have done two big water changes in 2 days and they are now back to normal.
Also my moor has fungus yet AGAIN on his tail but this should be easily remedied as Ive got it to go away before.
I guess I really just need help with the first two. All the first 3 fish are in different tanks too.
Please help!!

Oh!
I'm too ignorant to help.
But I'm rooting for you all.

What a homecoming Erin, you poor thing
The only thing I would add is if you can, start feeding medicated food - especially for your ranchu. Bacteria that causes wounds/ulcers has invaded internally so I would try to get some meds inside.
So the water's all good now?

So sorry you have to deal with sick fish Erin

but glad to see you safely home

It sounds like you are doing what you can. Do you have any medicated food as Jen suggests? I have had the same tiny red spots on Sorbet and she is doing much better after some very large water changes and medicated food..I think it was high nitrates with her.

OMG Erin, what a home coming! Glad you made it home safely though and I hope you are able to get the fish back to their healthy, normal state!
Do you have the foods on hand? Keep us posted on the progress.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
I do have MediGold which I started feeding the ranchu tank today. The pearlie doesnt eat anything but he is still hanging in there. Poor thing.
The ryukin is doing better now after the water changes. I assume nitrates were the culprit here for all.
Jen, the water is not perfect in the nitrates but a lot better than 160!! Closer to 50-60 now. I will do another water change tonight.

Thanks, Spaz!

Update on the ranchu, the spot is getting smaller!! Thats the good news. Hiro is still laying on his side. I did a water change on his QT last night and re-added meds. He is pineconed with red veins showing on his body. Also his tail and fins are very frayed away.

Im doing all I can for him but I do not have high hopes that he will survive.

Erin,I too am sorry to hear that your fish are sick again.Poor Hiro though may very well allready have some organ damage though,so be prepared for the worst-especially if he's not eating. Do you happen to have any idea at how long he's been without food?

Oh Erin, I am very sad to read this! How horrible for you as I know how happy you were when you got him! Maybe he will pull through with all you are doing for him!
I'm glad the others have improved!

Hey guys!
Hiro is still alive! I moved him into a bucket of fresh water with airstone and he seems more active. His tail and fins are so messed up I think its hard for him to swim now. He is still hanging on though.
Devs, he has probably been without food for a week now. I will try to feed him again tomorrow.
The ranchu's spot is all but gone! Can barely tell anything was ever there.

That's a very good sign Erin.If he would have gone off of food any longer, you would have had to force feed ,and that's no fun.Try to feed him as much as he'll eat in two minutes twice a day as he really needs to get enough in him to start working him back to 100 %.Glad to hear that he's still with us.

Hiro has stopped eating and just lays on the bottom of the bucket. I change 100% of the water daily and there is a airstone in there too. He is all blotchy, almost bruised looking in some spots. His tail is a stub and is bloody looking at the ends and his poor little fins are frayed.

I dont know what I can do. Do you think I should put him back in the 10 gallon and do another round of the Maracyn's?

I think you would be the best judge Erin. Do you think he looks like fighting or giving up? That would tell you your answer.
Take care sweetie, it is hard I know. We are here to help if we can.

Thanks Laurie. I think he has given up.

I think tonight I will put him into the 10 gallon to see how he reacts and judge from there.

That's what i'd do Erin - it's worth a shot. Will you give the maracyns a try?

Dec 29 2006, 08:38 PM
Yes. Is one better for this than the other or should I go with both again? I tried to feed him a pellet but he spit it out. Not a good sign.

Just an update to say he is still hanging in there. I tried to forcefeed him a pellet but he wouldnt eat it. When I take the towel off the bucket he does try to swim a bit but other than that he is on his side all the time.

It's so worrying for you, I know what you're going through. I had my Braveheart pull through a week of not eating after an illness. Hang on to hope. Did you add the meds? Wishing him strength

Erin, I think because he's weak, it may be best to go with only one Maracyn and I think the best would be maracyn two as it treats the most common pathogens.
I'm saying a prayer that he pulls through and let us know how he goes with M2.

Another nightmare for poor Hiro! I woke up today (around 3pm!) and saw the towel that I keep over the bucket was caved in(Im guessing that one of the cats was the culprit). The towel was submerged on the fish. I lifted the towel and the water was all soapy and foamy!! I expected poor Hiro to be dead. I hurried and carried the bucket to the kitchen and he was still alive! I hurried and changed the water out. Im just glad that the cats didnt get him.
