blink.gif My oranda Yoko has some white bulges under the skin behind her gills.
Does anyone have any idea what these are?. They are about 1\4 cm around and looks like little blisters under the scales.
Also is there any other reason for fin fraying? My water quality is perfect. purpban.gif

Im not postive but this could be something 2 do with breeding smile.gif

yeah, if the spots are on the gill plates themselves then i would say they were breeding tubricles. if they are not on the gill plate then i would be worried about ich. hope this helps you a little. about the fin fraying, are you sure that they are not tears as when the males are breeding, they can tear the females fins quite badly. you say your water quality is perfect, can you tell me your perimeters? some fish like orandas can be quite sensitive to a higher ph level that a normal goldfish would do fine in.

What are your water parameters exactly?
Are any scales lifted in any other areas?
yima
ohmy.gif My ph is 7.5 ammonia 0 nitrite 0.1 (added salt as tap water is 0.1) nitrate 5
I recently raised the ph a little too much and yoko's fins were frayed a little but they healed and the ph has been steady ever since. It definately doesn't look like ich as I have dealt with that before. I t really looks as if there are a couple of eggs under the skin with a bulge on either side behind the gills. Kind of pearlized. I've never come across anything like it before on this site. I would have thought about breeding but Yoko is only 1 year -1 year 1\2 old. She's? only 2 inches without tail. Don't they have to be 3 years before they breed? blink.gif

ohmy.gif Oh I forgot. There are no lifting scales. But I noticed one scale is missing.
Neptune the calico has been bugging her a little and they normally get along quite well. But he also seems a bit small for breeding.

Have you seen any itching or scratching at all?
Also, nitrites should always be at 0. Any trace amounts can be harmful to fish so you really need to try to lower this to 0 by doing 30% water changes daily using dechlorinated and temperature matched water.
I'm not sure about the white things behind the gills. Possibly gill maggotts but without seeing it I really couldn't say for sure. How long have you had the fish and have you introduced any new fish recently?
The fin fraying is almost certainly caused by the nitrites, so get them to 0 and the find shoudl heal well.
have you tested for nitrates? These should always be kept below 20.

wink.gif How can I get my nitrites below 0.1 if that is how it comes out of the tap? sad.gif I thought adding salt helped to protect from nitrites in trace amounts. My nitrates are always 5. There is no itching and yoko has no symptoms of any parasite. What do gill leaches look like? I'd like to rule that out as it sounds nasty. Again I'll describe what I'm seeing as I don't have a camera. There are two ( one on either side) little white balls (about 1\8th inch) beneath the skin behind each gill plate. There is no raising of the scales. And they seem to be in her body as apposed to under the scales. Thanks for all your suggestions.
