Looking for possible tank mates for my mudskipper. Are there any brackish crabs or snails that could go with him Preferably a large snail or samll crab. Thanks for the suggestions in advance smile.gif

Hi Susan, sorry I can't help you but I have let a few people know your thread is here. Hopefully one of them can get you some info.

So sorry I had missed this before!! unsure.gif Nerites are a perfect brackish snail. There are several available for aquariums, including zebra and virgin nerites. I have seen various ones come through for reef tanks before, and they can be acclimated to brackish tanks (I think we had talked before about the changing salinity and how brackish animals are used to it–same goes for the snails).

I know there was a great plant site that actually sold the Nerita virgineus (I think that's what they're called) as freshwater algae controllers, though they can tolerate and breed in brackish water.

Thanks for the reply smile.gif I am going to look these snails up right now and learn some about them

I've read on several sites that fiddler crabs are actually better suited to brackish tanks than the freshwater ones they are traditionally kept in. However, they need a way to reach the surface and are escape artists, so you may be better to just stick with the snails!

Fiddler crabs, cute smile.gif ! Actually the tank is half filled with many ways to access flat rocks because I keep a mudskpper, who needs to get out of the water also (and chooses to be out of the water most of the time) The tank is closed up well because mudskippers are jumpers and are actually quick across the floor.. might be a good choice. I will look into these guys. Thanks smile.gif
