I would clean out your tank and do a fishless cycle to get the tank going then get your fish.As cycling with fish is stressful on the fish.
doc.
thanks. thats what im planning to do, run a cycle. i am also going to 100% clean the tank, just incase. has anybody heard of chlorine remover? it says its supposed to work, but im not sure and i dont what to waist my money on anything. smile.gif

as for the fish, pic what ever says "PICK ME, PICK ME!!!"

A good water conditioner to use is Prime. It removes Chlorine and Chloramine from your tap water. Its good to use for every water change, added with new water.

I would definitely get more, sooner the better. There's always a fishy that needs a good home. Try the commons--they're inexpensive and so full of life. Mine make me smile everytime I stop and watch them! smile.gif

all of my fish said "pick me." Even poor little mr. brain that was covered in ich, internal bacterial infection, and he was missing tons of scales. they have wonderfull personalities too.

how on earth do you choose jusst one?! i was at a pet store recently, and there was a huge tank of fancy golfish, and they were all swimming along the glass after me biggrin.gif it was so adorable!

smile.gif As much as I love the Commons/Comets/Shubs,be aware that they need even more space than the Fancies when it comes to tank size.
We all have gone through problems when we first started fish keeping,so don't give up-just learn from mistakes.Researching each area really helps. The tank cycling stage/Filter quality and size/ correct stocking amount/water changes, etc. Being aware gives your new fish a much better chance at quality of life. smile.gif
A good tip also, is to not bring more than one fish home at one time , if your tank isn't cycled. smile.gif

I too have had tragic losses of fancy fish in early tank cycling, so I switched over to comets and never been happier...they are so much hardier and fun to watch...they are cycling my tank for me and I'm able to keep the water params in better conditions. Only thing is ...you need to find a new home for them when they grow too big for aquarium to avoid death from growth stunting....mine will be going to my friend's pond. Comets sure are beautiful! exactly.gif

Didn't you say you had a ten gallon tank?

And a pleco still in it?

I would go to a pet shop and ask them if they would take the pleco as a trade, and get one fancy goldie, and go from there. biggrin.gif

If your tank was overloaded with chlorine, you may have crashed your current cycle, so it'd be like starting all over again. A 100% clean may not be completely necessary -- just vaccuum your gravel like normal and change your water. If illness wasn't the culprit of your fishes' death, it's not as imperative to clean the tank as much.

I definitely think more fish are in order for you -- even if it's only one.

thanks! when yal were talking about everone saying "PICK ME", well i went to "Fish, Fish, FIsh", the best fish store i have heard of, every dang fish had that lable"PICK ME". i wanted to tell the fish, "dont worry, im comming back!"(cause you all know how weird i can be). yes i have a 10gal but sadly my tank is now emptey. but ive been saving up money to get more fish anyways. my cousin gave me a big tank and i just havent gotten around to going over there to get it. do plecos and commets like eachother? seems like someone told me that the plecos would suck the fishes slime-coat, or something? rolleyes.gif

Yes, I lost my comet thanks to a sucky pleco...obviously he wasn't eating enough algae and thought my comet's slime tasted great....but my poor comet died as a result....honestly I am afraid to ever buy a pleco again...maybe there's different types, but I'm staying far away from them as a beginner.
