My son's betta is sick with fungus. He has it by his dorsal fin and by his mouth (top part). Both are small patches. Since he is in a three gallon tank, I filled up a ten gallon tub to medicate him and when the temp matches that in his tank he will be placed in there. My jungle labs fungus treatment has tablets for ten gallons, so I'm going this route cause I dont know how to cut the tablet to get the right quantity for three gallons. (I'd prefer to have him in a five gal., but all I could afford at the time was three gal).
Anyways, I'm betting we have had him for almost two years. He was already full grown when we got him. Do you think the meds will be too hard on him?

The best thing to do is guess or buy a different type of medicince in liquid form. Even if the meds are too hard on him, the fungus could end up killing him so the best thing to do is go ahead and treat him. You should take some tank water in a bowl and put the pellet into the bowl and wait for it to dissove, then pour the water into the tank. By dissolving the meds out of the tank you can dilute it and make it so tha tits not so tuff on him.

There has been some argument as to how effective the meds are after they've been sitting in water for days. I think it would be better to crush the tablet and divide it into thirds (that's what I've done). The change to the 10 gallon while he's sick may stress him out more than you want. Does he have a heater?

I think the info the other two gave you is sound. If you are having trouble figuring out betta meds there is a posting at the top of the betta section on betta meds made easy. Here is it is.

Is it white cotton wool or almost transclucent? You have to know what type of fungus or it could be columnaris which is bacterial and not fungal. It sounds from where it is to be columnaris so can you provide a pic or describe it better?

Yes as Sandy suggested a pic would be helpful so she could get an idea of what kind it is.

I agree with Sandy. We need to rule out Columnaris as it specifically needs bacterial treatment, Maracyn one works well for that I think. For other fungus, sometimes plain aquarium salt works well and is much more gentle and easier to dose, IMO. Most Bettas will tolerate it up to 0.2%, some more, but start low (0.05%), work up and monitor closely if you do decide to use
