Could someone help me with my Java moss please? It seems to get pieces of food stuck in there that i cannot vacuum out. I have quite a lot and its attached to a long piece of wood. Kingyo mentioned 'troopers'would work and i dont know exactly what he meant (some kind of shrimp?-that would be nice )

I also have a big bit of java fern that gets food stuck in it.. but I have a dojo loach that goes through it and eats it all up Shrimp would work, but not sure about in a goldfish tank, I think they'd get eaten.

Thanks Lucy I'd love a loach but Id be overstocked. Would ghost shrimp be eaten by my 3 baby (4cm each) goldfish? They are one bubble eye, one panda telescope and one siamese albino- all very docile but..

You could try it I suppose.. they would probably try and eat them but just nip them. I'm not sure if they would choke on bits of them though. ..you could.. if its not too much trouble at each feeding time, to remove the java fern and wood. Then just stick it back in when everything's eaten.

I have java fern, too, but I have other fish/snails in all of my tanks that eat any leftover food, so it has never been a problem.
Maybe you could try keeping the java fern clipped low

If you can swish it around with your hand a little, usually things stuck in the moss will come free.

I'm sorry for not replying earlier... by troopers I meant shrimp and small fish. I keep my Java moss trimmed (less than 2 inches thick) and my Amano shrimp, corydoras, and rosy barbs keep it clean.

Hi Kingyo. Well my java is now at leat 4 inches..its grown I guess..Ill clip it. Also will have to check amano shrimp (are they by any chance red an white?) and you say corydoras and rosybarbs are okay with goldies ?

I have Amano shrimp with my goldfish but it has a lot of places for them to hide 'cause they'll get eaten if caught. The Java moss is in my tropical tank so I DO NOT have corydoras and rosy barbs with goldfish. I had a terrible experience with corydoras and goldfish. A small one got sick and a goldfish tried to eat it. THe goldie got it stuck in his mouth and I had a 911 emergency! I would not recommend barbs or corydoras with goldfish.

Okay. I don't have a tropical tank ...sorry about the experience with a goldie mistaking a corydory for something to eat- that must have been scary.
Well, I cut the moss shorter as suggested and my 2 miniature albino plecos are helping a bit with eating extra food. Thanks all. All seems well for now
