Full Version: Topfin Prepackaged Live Plants
Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Goldfish plants, & how to set up a planted tank

I just saw these Topfin live plants for aquariums. They are individually packaged in plastic cylinder containers with a sort of wet gel material at the base. They are advertised to be "snail free". I saw a Amazon Sword plant and a Wisteria both of which I read here may be good for gf tanks. Does anyone know about these Topfin plants? Do you think they would still need to be qt'd or can be considered safe since they are not in an aquarium but in a prepackaged container?

I would definetely quarantine them, and make sure they are free of things - not just snails, but if they have been raised in a fish tank, or even filtered with one of those central filter systems that they have often in pet stores, then the plant might have been in contact with other things like parasites.
When I had plants, I had them sit overnight in a bucket with a mild potassium permanganate solution, but if you don't have that at hand, I think somebody mentioned a very mild bleach solution. smile.gif

Thanks. I went ahead and bought them and they have been sitting in a bucket of water for 3 days with a Parasite Clear tablet. Does this seem like it would do the trick or should I use bleach (I was hesitant to use this since I was worried that it would either kill the plants or hurt the fish when I put the plants in the tank if I couldn't wash it out well enough).

Jungle Clear Water is a dilute pp solution and is readily available. That would be a good thing to use just as a precaution.

The sword plant would stand up well to the bleach, but the water wisteria may not. Which plant are you calling water wisteria ... could you describe it?

The plant came in a little plastic container that said aquarium wisteria ( hygrophila difformis). It has small, thin teardrop shaped leaves that have jagged edges. It looks pretty fragile. I can try to find the Jungle Clear Water - I used PC since it says it is good for parasites and bacteria but maybe it is not supposed to be used for plants? Oops sad.gif

Ok, I think I am ready to add my plants to my tank. Is there anything special I need to know? I have gravel (~1inch) and was just going to push the plants in there - is this ok? I also have rings weights I can put around the plants if it is better not to bury the roots but to leave them floating. I usually leave my lights on during most of the day plus the tank is in a pretty sunny room so I think I am ok in terms of light. Is there anything else I should know ahead of time (special fertilizar, etc.)? As a reminder I bought an Amazon Sword and Wisteria (see below for details). Thanks much for the advice smile.gif
