Full Version: Using A Metal Trough To Make A Pond

I saw some pictures in the phot gallery here of a lady who used a metal feeding trough to make a pond.
I absolutely LOVE this idea. However it wasn't mentioned what one should use to line the trough? So, what might I use if I decide to do this for next spring?

Also, how might I line the trough so it doesn't look gaudy, that is, with liner overlapping the top or something?

thanks,

I haven't made one myself, but you could try lining the pond edge with rocks?

That is, a flat flagstone sort of rock around the perimeter to hide the liner, and maybe plant some overhanging ferns or plants or something between a few of the rocks to hang over the water?

I don't know what kinds of terrestrial plants would work, or what kinds of rocks would be safe, though, but if you're going for the natural look, I'm sure there has to be something...

Whatever you do, definitely post pics once it's done! I look forward to seeing your pond.

Oh! good Idea! I never thought about sinking it into the ground. Great idea though, definitely something to consider.

What I was trying to find out though was what I should line the inside of the trough with so it doesn't rust or leach out harmful metals and hurt the fish. Like how to conceal a pool liner in there, or if there is some paint type product I could use.

That just got me thinking though.
If I did sink the whole torugh into the ground, then maybe the outside would rust from too much moisture in the soil surrounding it. That could cause problems.... sad.gif

If you were able to find some sort of aquarium-safe rubber type paint...

You could turn the trough upside down and paint the outside with a couple coats, let it dry, then flip it over and do the same to the inside?

Unfortunately, I don't know where you'd find something like that....

...Ooh. You could even, if you're game for a little more work, stack a set of matching rocks on one side as a bit of a waterfall to return water from the filter system, and hide the pumpworks... but then.. I think once I have my own property... I'm going to drive the neighbors crazy for the first few months with all of my home/garden decorating plans. hah.gif
