So my boyfriend is in the military and oversea's at the moment...Today I was lucky enough to get a phone call and he was telling me one of his friends girlfriends mailed him a picture of an engagement ring she wants for Christmas. His friend was standing next to him and he said "here talk to Ace for a second and tell him what you want for Christmas"...

So I say my hello's and proceed to chat on with Ace who is also one of my boyfriend's best friends so I know him well...So he asks me what I asked for and there's was nothing but dead silence when I said a 300 gallon horse trough for my fish.

Now don't get me wrong I'd love an engagement ring and I'm sure within a year I'll have one but I really need the tank right now...His friends all think I'm weird now blink.gif

LOL. I know how you feel! When I go home to MN people ask me what I do, go to school(no), work(no). I say I take care of my goldfish. Man do I get looks. rolleyes.gif

That is great!

If it helps... my family thinks I'm insane for having a 40 gallon tank in my bedroom. Mom is still convinced I could have just "stuck a feeder fish in a bowl with a little goldfish grass" and it would have been fine.

You are partially to blame here missy.....Since you're the one who found me that link I've been on the phone with them twice and already have driving directions and he won't be home for about a month! LOL

Many thanks hon!!!

hey i think we've all been looked at funny when we've started going on about fish tanks to our friends and family, they just dont get it! They all have their silly little obessions (dancing, gardening, certinan types of music/films, etc....) what's so different about fish being your 'thing'!?

But then i get grouchy because people label me a 'fish person' and buy me nothing but fish related stuff (just random things with fish pics on etc) for christmas and birthdays and i'm like "yeh it's cool, but fish arent the only thing i like, have a little imagination u boring lot!!"

Guess i'm just never happy, lol!!!

My family is like that when it comes to Harry Potter and Pokemon. I have some really weird "treasures" that they have gotten me that are somehow related to one of those subjects. But honestly, if they want to give me a gift, I'm more than happy to accept it!

This year I'm trying to encourage people to give me fish related things... not anything huge, but I'd like a heater for my tank, I'd also like a stand, a few different food types that I wanted to try out, some decor, gift certificates redeemable "for 1 goldfish of your choosing" (much better than having my parents try and pick me a fish), and as always, any new tank is welcome. I also really want a python and a real hood for my tank. Oh and I want a new airstone because I don't like my long skinny one, I want one of those flat disc shaped ones.

Non fishy related things on my christmas list this year, Stargate season 9 on dvd, new pants, some new shirts and the women of scifi calendar.

My friends already think I am nuts because I can be overly concerned (like last night... had to leave a party because I left a heater on in a betta tank...) I am afraid for the day they ever catch me talking to them! smile.gif I have many hobbies though. Fishing, kayak fishing, surfing, downhill skateboarding, sailing, kitesurfing (just gettin' in to it), custom beach cruisers, bird watching (mostly marine species), beach combing, cooking, night life, camping, etc.

A few different food types that I wanted to try out...

I'm not sure if you have Big Al's near you but the otherday I went in and asked the clerk about fish food types, explaining I have super picky goldies. My little guys won't eat very much while the larger fish can't get enough. So I asked if they had any samples, I walked out with about 7 different bags of hikari sample's and so far even the picky one's like the sinking lionhead pellets which they said are good for all types of goldies. If not I can always wait a until someone else is at the counter and mail em to ya. smile.gif

nice tactic!

The only Big Al's that I can see in the states is the one in Florida, which is about as far as you can get from where I'm at.

Basically I want to get some of that Salad Supreme stuff from goldfish connection, and some freeze dried blood worms, I've got a couple different types of pellets... I just need to put some variety in their diets, because peas and pellets alone just doesn't seem right to me.
Katalyst
Hey I spend enough at Big Al's that they should be giving me something darnit! I keep pestering them to sell me one of their big tanks that's been sitting empty...I'll wear them down eventually...I'm exausting like that.... biggrin.gif

Katalyst,

I sure don't think you're weird! I want one of those 300 gallon Rubbermaid polytubs, too!

My family doesn't think I'm strange for being obsessed with my goldfish. They are used to me being obsessed with my show dogs and hundreds of flowers and shrubs, too. haha. This is just par for the course.

I swear we're related...My other obsession is gardening as well....And trying to keep the naughty but cute squirrels in my yard from digging up all the bulbs I've planted for the Spring!

Where in England are you? I lived in Jersey for a few years and I miss England so much! I would try going to a larger fish store and asking for the samples. In a general pet store I don't know you'd find one but one that sells fish alone I'm sure would be your best bet.

There are Big Al's in the States and they may ship to the UK so that may be your best bet. To date my pickiest eaters are my smallest fry and I've had a lot of success with Hikari's Oranda Gold pellets as well as frozen bloodworms, daphina and brine shrimp. I try to mix things into pea's that are good for them that they don't necessarily like and then they eat it without a problem.

You mentioned your fish don't like pea's so I have a question or two for you on that subject. Are you de shelling the pea's? Goldfish cannot digest the pea shell so its really simple to pinch the pea out of the shell or scrape it off with your fingernail. Also are you cooking them? I pop mine into the microwave with some water for 35 seconds and then just mush it all up so the babies can actually fit them in their mouths.

im from bournemouth, thats in dorset(dorset is a few hours away from london) i've been to jersey it lovely, did you go to the zoo? yep, peas, they just dont like them.well thats not entirely true, the shubnkin likes them, but the others dont . yep i cooked them, take the skin off,put them through a garlic press, then slightly squash them up.so all the others just have flake, expect two of the white cloud mountain minnows.two of them like bloodworm, but again no-one else does.its driving me crazy krazy.gif ! there is reeally any big aquatic stores around here.theres only 4 purpose built aquatic shops ,the rest are pet shops (and i wont shop in them). and those four are tiny, the size of a rest room in burger king rofl3.gif ,sorry couldnt
think another universal example,anyways...i've tried them and had no luck.i think my best bet is to try on the internet.thanks for your input x

Oooh, Ive been to Durrell zoo! Amazing alaotran lemurs there, so cute!

Anyway, I definitely know what your talking about. My family thinks im ridiculous. I think also b/c its goldfish and not some fancy tropicals or marines that makes it even worse.
