I've already posted this in the Informational Sites area, but as most people come here to chat, I decided to post here as well. Koko probably won't like it but I feel that this information is very useful and should be where the majority of traffic flows. If this thread could be pinned so that everyone can see it, I think that it will save a lot of fish dying from 'New Tank Syndrome'. The pH and temperature sections are particularly useful to both novices and experts.

The end of the first paragraph was a bit of a shock:
Statistically, as much as 60% of the fish sold for a new aquarium will die within the first 30 days. 2 out of every 3 new aquarists abandon the hobby within the first year.

The reason for hobbyists giving up is indeed due to fish dying and people not getting to grips with how their aquarium runs.

Good article.

Its why we ask to check gill colour all the time as its a sign the blood is a healthy colour. Brown gills is a sign of nitrite poisoning and people should make it part of their daily routine to keep a check.

I think most people would agree with you. It's a very informative article and I now know that my tanks are at the optimal temperature for the bacteria biggrin.gif

I enjoyed the article and would like to see more like it. I think it is important to understand the processes that take place in the tank. It would help me to make better decisions when something goes wrong.

I'm glad we're on the same page here, and I'm pleased you liked it. If people actually understood what goes on in a tank, then they would be able to make calculated decisions, like NOT USING A BOWL!
