I've recently tried out making gel food and my goldfish seem to be really into it! Right now the gels are pretty plain, just some organic baby food peas and unflavored gelatine, and a single packet seem to make a lot.

I guess my question now is how much is too much? My serving of gelatine is only about a 1cm cube. I'm a little excited and I want to feed them the gel at the end of the day after their other servings of staple food: omega one pellets. Could the daily gelatine be problematic for them? Can they get sick from it?

Thanks in advance!

I wish I could help Nenn, I made a batch and saying they hated it would be the understatement of the year. And normally my fish eat just about anything! Picky little creeps! rofl3.gif

Gelatine is just made from some part of a pig.. trotters? pig fat? hmm.. I'm not sure..
I've just made my first (successful!) batch of gel food and I've been feeding it every day so far to see how it goes with them. I think it has a good balance of protien and fibres and all that..
I threw in some pellets, a big hunk of cucumber, an apple, some carrot, green beans, garlic and freeze dried krill.. all blendered into a paste.. then some bloodworm added to that.

The ammount of gelatine added was probably not enough to give them health issues if it was fed as their main diet (I hope). Especially seeing as it is an all natural product with no salt or anything.

But I would also like to know if its ok to feed as a staple.. as it does seem very healthy biggrin.gif

Hehe, sounds delicious Lucy Fish! It's so exciting to cook for goldfish, I feel kind of weird mentioning it to anyone outside this forum. biggrin.gif

I hope it's not a problem as a well-balanced staple food, I was thinking of making a batch for when I leave for a month of vacation. I think it would be easier for my friend to feed to just drop a cube in than to deal with soaking pellets and making sure my fish get a fair share.

Sounds yummy! lol. i'm thinking about making some more gel food, my last lot was a bit of a disaster, might copy you a bit lucy a put a bit of bloodworm etc in it

Gelatine being made of pig is a bit off putting, i wonder if vegeterian gelatine might be a bit better for the fish??

I didn't see a gelatine-substitute in the jello shelf, but I'll have to double check the kosher section.

However, I know these substitutes are more carbs than protein, isn't that bad for goldfish?
