Full Version: Plants Problem - Absolutely Beginner
Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Goldfish plants, & how to set up a planted tank

This is my first planted tank, it runs about one month, two weeks with fish, and I think I have some plants problem. I added Florenette pill the first week and liquid fertilizer the second week (Florena, Sera), and then pill again. Lights are on about 12 hours a day, sometimes more if I come home later. This is my echinodorus:

Some people told me it's normal, that it takes few months for plants to get used to new tank conditions, but I want to check with you, if someone knows what could be reason for this ugly plant condition.

It could be caused by iron deficientcy (sp). Is this the only plant you have in the tank? If not, do the others look like this? You might want to dose with an iron suppliment fertilizer. For the trace nutrients, most fertilizers already have these.

Many sword plants are grown terrestrially in nursaries because it is easier. Swords live along the amazon river and grow two different types of leaves: terrestrial for drier seasons and aquatic for monsoon season. The leaves are also shaped differently but its hard to tell if all leaves are one kind. It may be transitioning to aquatic (mine did that) or it could be an iron or other nutrient defficiency.

If they are transitioning to aquatic, they look like this?

Yah, they do look like that. I had a good photo that looked almost exactly like yours but I can't find it. Here's the next best thing: http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/...showtopic=43345

I would still increase iron dosage with Flourish Iron or something similar since we are not sure what the cause is. Swords LOVE iron so it wouldn't hurt, just be sure not to use too much at once. Root tabs are also imperative since they are heavy root feeders.

OK, but there's one "problem" - I caught one of my fish yesterday digging plant roots and chewing pill whatjust.gif!
