I placed a slice of cucumber in my tank for my 2 apple snails to eat....they really love eating goldfish flake food but my ammonia is really high....so I stopped feeding them the flakes and switched to this cucmber but they've avoided the cucumber all day...will they starve...should I feed something else? How long can they go without eating?
Peaches
you could try algae wafers
glitterfish
Mine love romaine lettuce. I just bought one of those food clips that suctions to the glass, stick a leaf in there and they gobble it up. You could also just throw the clip in and it will sink the lettuce to the bottom. I also know someone who feeds green beans. Peas would also work.

I feed my snails all kinds of veggies and fish foods.I have found that the Cana Apple Snails don't seem to mind them raw,but my Brig Apple Snails prefer their veggies on the softer semi-cooked side.
Cukecumber's,Greenbeans/Squash/Zuchinni/Kale/Collard/Mustard/Turnip greens,pieces of carrot/Raisins/Grapes/,they love it all. biggrin.gif
Do you throw the cukecumber in raw?Maybe try cooking it in the microwave a bit in a little bit of water to soften it up.Sometimes snails that don't get the opportunity to fresh foods take a little longer to realize just how good they are. biggrin.gif

If your ammonia is really high, it might be making them feel unwell, so they dont want to eat. Snails are sensitive to water params. So if you fix that, they might be more interested in their food smile.gif

If you have brigs they like their food steamed, they will not eat very much fresh produce except for various greens. Canas don't really care, they will eat anything. biggrin.gif

So I put peas, green beans and squash (all cooked) in tank todya....and they devoured the peas leaving all else...in fact the 2 snails seemed to both want the same pea..they were on top of each other trying to eat the same pea! I'll leave the other vegs. in til tomorrow in case they eat more. Thanks for food tips! bingo.gif

So what's difference between brigs and cana...can I tell difference? post-4056-1113060392.gif

Well, there is a difference in the shape of the shell. And canas get to be the size of softballs, where brigs stay about the size of a ping-pong ball. Canas are rounder and don't come in as many colors as brigs do. I think that canas are only gold colored.

Check out http://www.applesnail.net/content/species_genera.htm for illustrations on the differences in the shells.
