No. These newts as with most eat fish so your current goldies would either be eaten or mutilated.

Maybe next time before you impulse buy you will check first to see if they are compatible.
I really think you should return it to the shop or buy it a 5 to 10 gallon tank. Even though it is a lot smaller it wont stop it from having a go, and maybe through the night when your fish are sleeping they wont and you wont see it happen.

Your newt may look small and harmless right now, but he will become aggressive to the goldfish and any other animal in the tank...not to mention reach a length of 6-7" long. They are mostly aquatic so you don't need a half water half land set up. However, you do need to provide islands for him to climb onto to get out of the water and rest. It you can't find ornaments that are tall and big enough, a slab of cork will make a nice floating island.
I agree with the others. He does not belong with goldfish and you should find a new home for him or set up a 10 gallon with all the accessories to keep him alone in.

Everyone told you not to put it in there. Take it back to the store.

If the store won't take him back, is there anything black tail can do with dividers?
It's probably not feasible, I just got a sudden bolt of curiosity.

Maybe depending on her tank size. Dividing the tank would cut down on the room for the goldfish.

Get a rubbermaid tub...Or something equivelent.

The store will most likely take him back. Almost all stores have some sort of money back return policy, and you haven't had him that long at all. Even then, most stores will take them back anyways but just not re-imburse you. I would take him back.
A 10 gallons+ rubbermaid tub would be a good option but you would need to buy another heater and filter for him...plus you already said that another tank was not feasable. A divider would be okay, but it would have to be the flimsy kind with holes since the glass kind would require a separate filter. This really does limit both the goldfish's room and the newt's room. Both animals get very large and won't do well at all in that set up long term.
Sorry if this sounds kind of harsh, but this really isn't bad luck since the situation was 100% avoidable. Next time please do lots of research before considering any pet.

No problem
Now, as for the gravel from the drive. Can you get a pic of it please? Most gravel that isnt aquatic has sharp edges and most are coated with toxic substances.

... This still doesn't seem like a very good situation. If I were you I'd take him back to the store ASAP.

ooh sorry sandy no-can do my computer won't let me upload photos on it so i might be able to send you a pic on monday and it's the common one you get in most drives i think..... no it;'s a bit smoother!

I'd just take out the gravel. Even if its smooth, you should know exactly what kind of rock it is since it is not designated for the aquarium because many rocks and minerals can completely mess up your pH, etc.

It was for you and Black tail if she wants to learn how to care for them.
They are amphibians. There are many types of newts but best to look them up and see how to care for them properly.

I would say removing the gravel is a must if you can not identify the kind or combination or minerals/rock it is because it could be dangerous. If you like the look of gravel you can buy some from the petstore.
