My lfs got in some new different looking bettas and I saw this little guy in a bag floating in a frontosa tank. Of course everytime I tried to get him to flare the big dumb frontosa would come investigate my finger and block the view! So anyway I bought him and I wasn't even sure how he looked until I got him home.

I don't know what tail type he is, but he is really cute and was only $2.99! He's definitely spunky though. Right now he's temporarily in a pretty tiny tank, but in the next couple of days I'll be setting my sorority up and freeing all of my betta-sized tanks so he'll upgrade to one of those.

What a cutie! smile.gif Looks like a round tail (sometimes called fan tail) to me.
Hidr
Delta tail or possable halfmoon. Not sure unless you can get a shot of him flairing. Nice find.
vmlola
Wow, hes really preatty! heartpump.gif Congrats on your new betta!

Is this a male or female? If male, it looks like he has growing to do. I would say fan tail since it is round but could grow to delta tail.
BeancurdTurtle
I was wondering if it was female too. I don't know how to tell.
Imber
I think that it's male. I don't see an oviposter so I think it's just a tiny boy.

The eggspot isn't always visible. Most females only show it when they are ready to breed. I've only seen an eggspot on my VT girl when she use to live on the other side of a male. Now that she is in a female tank it isn't visible. But the body shape looks a bit more male-ish. Females tend to have a fatter rounder body. Good way to check if it is female is to bump up the temp 1-2 degrees.
Hidr
My male halfmoon had a tail that short when I first got him. So it could still be a halfmoon or a delta tail. Never heard of a "fantail" except in goldfish. lol
d_golem
Ray-splitting up until quarternary so should be a delta or super delta. If u could get him to flare then we'll know what he is.
Tail edges are too rounded so can't be a halfmoon.
Definitely a male though, fins are way too long to be a female.
Imber
Thanks for all the info guys! Whatever he is, he was cheaper than the usual pet store veil tails and is a total sweetheart so I couldn't be happier. I guess I'll just have to get him to grow! Oh and I named him Chester.
mrbumblebee
Congratulations Imber! Chester is a lovely Betta - I think he's quite young too, enjoy seeing him grow biggrin.gif

Here is a picture of a single tail female from one of my favorite breeders and sellers. This girl has fins just as long as this guy so it is possible that it could be female.

Oh! I overlooked one important feature! The ventrals are definitely female's ventrals biggrin.gif

So yeah, coupled with sushi's pic, then most likely a female.
Lady_D
I am thinking female, too. Very pretty! Sounds like you got a GREAT deal!

Congrats Imber. He is beautiful. Such pretty colors. I am thinking he is a traditional plakat

Okey....where do u get that from?
Imber
Sorry to bump this up, but I got him to flair and he showed me his mane so I think he is definitely a he. Also, his tail did come out to a full D smile.gif Now I just need to get him to do it for the camera!
Devs
rolleyes.gif Well regardless of what he /she is,the important factor is that he's a beauty. You'll have to post more pics of him and his new space.Congrats!~!
bettaqueen
excuse me I mean she. Still think she may be a plakat. If you got her tail to form a D then she might be part delta tail. Girls flare as well as the boys. Kissy has a girl that flares all the time. Another way to tell if he is male is, did you see him flare his beard when he flared? If you saw a beard then he is a male, if not then a female. All males have beards

A fantail aka roundtail is when the tail is rounded at the edges instead of straight like a delta or hm.

I don't personally think it looks like a plakat. It looks more like it's a juvie with fins still growing. If it is indeed a juvie the gender can be hard to tell. I raised two spawns of plakat babies and they always tricked me. rolleyes.gif I've even had male plakats more laid back then the females come out of those spawns.

You are right about girls flaring, but whether Imber's fish is a he or a she, it's clearly not a traditional plakat. Traditional plakat's most important feature is the short, rounded tail and secondary ray branching only. Imber's fish clearly has tertiary and even quarternary branching, so there's no way that it's a trad. plakat.
Ponderosa Power
Gee I dunno imber! Chester will have to be an It for a while rolleyes.gif Some girls have tiny beards, but full grown males usually have large ones. Females can flare and build bubble nests (usually not big ones though) and males can have oviposters and shorter fins...there's just no tellin' these days tongue.gif

Whatever the sex and breed, Chester's one good looking betta smile.gif
Selena
I think your betta is beautiful. Maybe Chester is a cross dresser which is why it's hard to tell if he's a boy or girl blink.gif
