Full Version: Can Bubbles Get Too Large On A Bubble Eye?

I have wondered for some months if Bubbles could get so large they might eventually cause a death, if not death, at least much misery.

Here is link to pic of my Bubbles and the size of his large Bubbles.

I do not think the size of the Bubbles caused his death, however, I think they caused problems.

He was 5 1/2 inches from mouth to end of tail.
His Bubbles were 3 inches from one end to the other.
I drained the bubbles during the autopsy, and one Bubble had 3 teaspoon of fluid, while the other had 3 1/2 teaspoon. That is a lot to be caring around, plus the weight of the skin.

I wonder if the Bubble can cause breathing difficulty, as they were so close to the gill, as to seem to cause extra effort in the gill movement.

Would like opinions on this. I have searched the entire web and I can not find any info. on this.

Thanks
daryl
Large ponderous bubbles can cause a fish to swim very clumsily. They also make it a bit more difficult for them to eat -for chasing food down or digging it out of corners or out from under deco is nearly impossible. I made sure that I fed lots of veggies on a hanging clip for my bubble eye to nibble at her leisure.

I do not think I have seen a bubble eye that I would class as having bubbles that would cause death in and of themselves. The bubbles are, though, very prone to carrying infection, and because there are very few blood vessels that travel into and through the bubble tissue, it is nearly impossible to treat an infection internal to the bubble. You simply cannot get medication into the bubble through any normal means. The best bet is to rupture the bubble deliberately and fill it with an antibiotic. This will destroy the looks of the fish, but may save a life.

I met a bubble eye dealer years ago who had literally 100s of bubbleeye fish for sale - HUGE ones with monster bubbles. They were all active, swimming well, perky and doing great. Having the monster bubbles did make them less agile than other fish, but did not seem to cause any great harm.

I wish I could meet that fellow again! smile.gif

Bubbles was a beautiful fish. I am sorry he is no longer with you..... sad.gif

Thanks, everyone......Bubbles was my very first fish.

While I think Bubble Eyes are very entertaining, and have great personalities, I don't think I will ever get another one. As her Bubbles grew and grew, I watched as it got harder for her to find food, and to even eat food from the bottom. The Bubbles were touching the bottom of tank while her mouth would be maybe a 1/4 inch away. Also very hard to detect a swim bladder problem, as I couldn't determine the diferrence between swim bladder and her just trying to get to where she was going off balance with those bubbles.

A bubbleeye is not usually considered a "first fish" kinda fishy. You did remarkably well to get her to grow so wonderfully.

I hope your next one will bring you as many smiles as Bubbles did. smile.gif

im sorry abotu your baby:(
atleast you loved your fishy, and they were well cared for, swim free little bubbley eyed one.

i have another question relating to bubble eyes, ive seen some at the petshops with popped or deflated looking eye bubbles, it this normal or was someone just careless and it got hurt? i also heard people (while i was at the petshop i overheard this convo) planning to take a pin and pop them themselves so the fish would look normal!!!
why get a bubbel eye if you dont want the bubbles? honestly, some people. its sad.

Nanay, I'm sorry to hear about your fish, sad.gif I had a bubble eye who's bubbles grew to the same proportion as yours too! it's amazing that the bubbles keep growing. I don't think the bubbles themselves cause illness, perhaps when they get so big they cause a lot of stress on the fish and this makes them susceptible to getting sick? idont.gif Fantastic work keeping him going for so long, he was your first ever goldy? not a mean feat for a beginner! -So, if you aren't going to get another bubble-eye, what type of goldy are you going to try and keep now? smile.gif

Hobbity1 if you have a question of your own, can you please start posting them as a new topic and not asking them in someone elses thread? cheers! smile.gif
