I went and picked him up today, and he is now situated by himself 2.5gal tank w/ elite mini filter. He can easily handle the current of the filter and seems to be a very strong swimmer unlike our combtail betta. I believe it is a plakat betta according to the pictures I have seen. I am still indecisive on the name, but I think I might go with Voodoo. He is jet black, except for the red and black tips of his dorsal fins... he also has flourscent turqoise rays on his tail. I couldn't really get a good picture, but I did a google search and found a picture that is literally identical, except it doesn't have the turqoise on it's bottom fin.

I'll get pics of the tank up when I find my USB cord

Oh how pretty he is. He looks a lot like my own Zeke. The only diff is Zeke is black up front and that color blue in the back. Congrats on your new baby he is cute. Yes he is a plakat. They are one of my favorites

Thank you. I have been doing a little research and it says this species is bred by the Thai to fight. I am guessing that's why they were labeled black siamese fighters at the store. I would never even consider fighting betta fish, just thought it was interesting. The fish pictured is not mine... but I promise I will get pics up soon!

Wait until you see his tank set up

The tank is on my dresser so it's right in front of a mirror, I didn't want to stress the thing out so I put a few liquor bottles and a neat lookin' wood-carved mask behind the tank. The bottles look real neat due to the concave bowfront on the tank, and the mask adds to the 'morbid' affect

. I will be adding black aggrigate w/ a lightly scattered red gravel on top. I will be keeping a fake plant or two and I have to find a small enough skull ornament

I love him. I have a 2.5 gallon set up, but it has no water and, of course, no betta (yet!) Hope you have fun with your new boy!

Just an update... Voodoo is 100% cured of his eye injury and ich. Both eyes look identical and he seems to see fine so it looks like there is no permanent damage. He is active as ever... I almost reconsidered naming him 'Twitch' as he swims around like a maniac, and pauses with his fins flared as if ready to attack anything that swims past him. You should see this little monster eat live brine, it's quite a site to see. He kinda shakes his head like a shark if he only gets it half way in his mouth. The funny part about him is he will not flare at his reflection though, is this a sign of anything?

That is funny. No that is not a problem. Some bettas just flare more than others. Does he flare if you put a mirror in front of him?

He does not flare his gills, then again I have only tried once the day I got him and he could have been sick (and stressed out from the ride) at the time so that could have been a factor.

you might try again now that he has had a chance to settle in and get used to his new castle. Try putting a mirror in front of him .

I tried this earlier just to see, and yeah he definitely got his attitude back. Before he even flared he ran into the side of the tank trying to attack his reflection. He has red markings on his beard as well, I thought that was neat looking. I have also noticed that he has a very nice spade shaped tail... he doesn't have the rounded tail that I see with other plakats. Anyways, he is healthy as ever... he has himself a huge bubble nest going in the corner of his tank right now. He has been getting a mixed diet of hikari bio-gold, freeze dried bloodworms & daphnia, and live brine.

I am glad he is back to his little macho self. The food your are giving him sounds great. Zeke my plakats tail is a little spade shaped too.

I just noticed the other night that the 'beard' on his left side is missing or ALOT smaller than the right side. Is this normal or healthy?
