Well, our area of the great northwest is under flood watch, and I happen to live in the one area of town that gets flooding really bad. A few years ago we had to evacuate because the water was waist deep (for my mom, I was 9 or 10 at the time) and some friends of mine lost their house.

ANYWAY, I'm trying to get an emergency kit together cause I don't know how bad it might get if we have to evacuate, so I'm taking them with me.

So far I have.........

5 gal plastic tub (to be filled with tank water if we leave)
Battery opperated air pump
Test kit (pH, Amonia, Nitrate, Nitrite)
Salt
Stress Coat water conditioner
Net
Food

Anything else I may need?

I've had fin damage from bucket travel, before, so I don't think they're the ideal container, but they work in a pinch! How many fish do you have? How severe is the flood watch? Do you need 1 bucket for each fish, in case it turned into a week-long event?

Stress Coat is OK. Here's the thing, tho: If you're traveling becasue of emergency situations, you need a de-chlorinator that also removes ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, like that Amquel plus. Then, you're able to de-tox the water, if a water change isn't convenient at that moment.

Are you in a cold part of OR? do you need a heater in that kit? Maybe just take the one in tank, if you have to go away.

I would get some jugs to keep fresh clean water in in case you can't get to any. smile.gif

Another possibility is replacing the tub with a cooler, so the water temp stays more stable.

I'd add some Prime to that list. There are tons of other water conditioners but Prime by far is the best. I'd also keep some meds on hand especially if stores may be evacuated as well. Maracyn 1 or 2 just in case. Also I'd make sure to bring something to vacuum/syphon out the tank.

Thanks everybody, for the help!! They cancelled the flood watch really early this morning, but this has been an eye opener that I really need an emergency kit, lol.

I've got two fish living quite cusioned in a 90 gallon, and the temp is so stable I never really even think about it. I'll be looking into completing my emergency kit before I leave again (just got back from school, now moving to kentucky in 3 months) so my fish-sitters (aka parents) have it all in one place.

Thanks again!

Along the lines of medicines, you might want to add melafix to the list. It's great for healing fins quickly if they get bumped up with all the moving. smile.gif

We had some flood warnings in this area also in the last few weeks.. go Pacific Northwest rain! krazy.gif

Glad to hear you guys didn't have to evacuate, and good thinking for getting a setup for next season.. or next rainstorm...

It's almost kind of fun to imagine how you would pack up your stuff, and safely care for your goldies, given half an hour, or a few hours' notice, isn't it?

Then again, I like running around the woods and plotting how to live for days on three matches and a swiss army knife, so, your mileage may vary.
