Full Version: Dandelions And Goldfish

I was wondering if any of you have ever noticed dandelions drowing so near to your pond that koi/goldfish (GF in particular) have ever been able to nibble on the leaves or any exposed roots? Or if upon mowing some of the dandelion leaves blew into the pond whereby then the fish consumed it?

I am having trouble finding out online if it is safe for GF to eat dandelions. I am curious because I know as a medicinal herb it is good for humans kidneys and it is a diuretic. Because of this, I am wanting to know if it is safe for my goldfish to eat some right now, since she has dropsy. I thought perhaps it might help her kidneys. Also, it can purify the blood, which might also be good since her kidneys can not clean her blood right now.

I know this sounds really really weird. But I have been reading alot about how dogs and cats and other pets are helped by medicinal herbs. There is nothing out there on GF of course! I have already written letters to several places asking whether or not they know anything. I'm pessimistic if any one knows about herbs and GF though.

Thats why I figured I would ask all of you here, hoping you might have seen your fish nibbling and found them to be safe afterwards.

If they can eat dandelions, based on your experience, I figure it might not hurt to give her just a little bit of dandelion greens on top oh her metromeds and maracyn one, maracyn two, 80 degree temp, and epsoms salt treatment.

I know it is a long shot, and I know some people may think me absurd, but hopefully my letters might spark some interest in someone out there to do some more research in this area. I have read of several amazing stories about pets with serious ailments and poor health conditions getting better from the use of somple herbs. It saddens me that insofar as I can tell, no one seems to have considered our wet and wiggly finned friends.

consider me weird if ya will, but I'm gonna research this no matter what
(I'm too curious a person)

It is most certainly safe to feed dandelion leaves to goldies as one of their veggies. You would want to make sure the plants have not been exposed to any herbicides or other lawn chemicals. I try to pick mature leaves but not ones that have started to wilt and die. During the spring and summer months, I feed my goldfish (in tanks) dandelion leaves about once a week. The fancies never seem very interested, but my commons and comets love them

I'm not sure if the dandylions will help her condition, but they are healthy snacks. I used to grow some in a pot to keep them away from pesticides and weed killer etc. I've found that the fish liked the younger leaves because they are less bitter. Mice love them too, especially the blossoms smile.gif I'm not sure if it would be good to feed them to her right now though...If you are feeding medicated food, you shouldn't feed anything else. I don't know too much about medicinal herbs though, so maybe some one else can help.
