Alrighty, i have 3 lionheads that seem a bit constipated, I'm gonna say overfeeding. When they eat it takes way too long for food to pass. I know that peas would be good seeing as how they act as a laxative
but should i feed them peas while they are still constipated? or should i wait until tomorrow and feed them peas for a few meals? Any advice will be appreciated

you should always start feeding peas as soon as you notice your fish are constipated and use the peas as a meal replacement until they're better

Feeding peas is the way to go, but IMO, your goldies should be fasted at least a day before you start them on peas.

As a newbie... I'm gonna ask a silly question. Just exactly HOW do you know when a fish is constipated? I have 5 fish and I just don't know for sure when and how often each one of them poops or doesn't poop. I feed them peas daily anyway along with their regular diet. Is this wrong? Should peas only be fed if they are constipated? Or should they be part of their daily fare? They absolutely go nuts over the peas and gobble them up.

Well i've read that goldfish are suppose to pass their food in around 5 mins. and my guys are taking alot longer, like a few hours. I've also read somewhere about not feeding em for a while just like br553 said. But my biggest issue is that i have a few other fish that need to be fed, i got 12 tetras and a old angel fish. I got them with the tank, i am looking to get rid of em, but thats another issue. so i'm guessing i'm gonna have to fine some bowl or something big enuff to hold my goldfish in while i feed the others, and start giveing em peas for a few days starting tomorrow.

Signs of constipation are long trailing poop. Also white poop with air bubbles in is also a sign of constipation.
Fasting should be done for 3 days then fed nothing but peas for three days. Then feed peas twice a week instead of normal food.Hope that helps you smile.gif

Oh boy, this is gonna suck. I would feed em pellets, brine shrimp and peas. The pellets suggest feeding 2-4 times a day no more than 5 mins. of eating each time. for 10-20 mins of pellets a day, thats like instant over-feeding huh?

Most people only feed their fish once to twice a day.I tend to alternate feeding flakes one day brine shrimp, bloodworm, daphnia one of them another day not all three. Then peas on another.
I feed once a day and all my fish are thriving plus I have few problems with constipation as a result.
