do you have a big tupperware or laundry basket that you're not using? You could just put him in something till you go to the store. At wal mart you could get a 10 gallon for $10.

A standard bucket usually runs about 3 or 5 gallons,so that's not too big at all-especially if your fish is pretty big to begin with.
I would definately not mix him with the smaller fish
Sarasa's need at least 15-20 gallons just to start them off.
A Rubbermaid bin may be the way to go right now for sure,if you're not able to get him a new tank. They come in all different sizes and prices.I'd try to get the biggest one possible for him,and then add on a filter that flows 10x's the rate of the size of container that you get.
Really,it's about your best bet here unless you can purchase him a nice big tank. How big is this fish?

If he's quite ill, with sores on his tail, you should definately start a post in the Diagnosis section. With the size of your tank,it very well could be poor water quality issues, but we'd need a lot more info answered before we can say that for sure,so make sure that you try and answer all the questions up above in the disease section. smile.gif

Do you have a pound stretcher near you? I noticed that they sell large sturdy plastic containers for a few quid. I bought a 30 litre for £2 I think but they have much larger than that for super cheap. Buckets are normally 12 litres which is far too small and because of their shape there is little swimming room and a small surface area which is important for oxygen.

Other pound shops sell some quite big plastic storage containers too for nice and cheap. Get the biggest you can is my advice.

Kimbee, you're best bet would be to go to a large B&Q superstore. I went there last weekend and got a 34 litre clear plastic tub for exactly £5.48 and the lid was £2.99 - a total of £8.47.
I think I found it in the household section and it's basically a stacking crate with a seperate lid. It's very strong and you can easily keep an eye on the fish because the plastic is almost seethrough. You can cut a small hole in the lid and feed the filter in through it, plus there's handle holes in the side that you can feed the airline for the pump through.

What part of London are you in? I'm in Lewisham and there's a big B&Q in Charlton/Greenwich, where the big Sainsbury's and cinema are. If there isn't a B&Q near you, try to get to a Homebase because they also have a selection of containers in all different shapes and sizes for a very low price. Listen to me lol. I sound like I'm working on commission...

I steralised the container with hot water and a load of salt. Gave it a good scrub and left it for a while, then rinsed it with hot water. Sorted biggrin.gif

Hope this helps!

Dont forget Wilkinsons have then super cheap too! some of those ones will bow out quite a bit, I bought some of those secure thingys.. erm, not sure what they are called, you use then to secure things to the top of your car, by pulling a thing through metal bit which holds it tight.

Hi Lucy. I forgot about Wilko's, I didn't get there in the end. Are you talking about ratchet straps? You feed the strap through the buckle thing and then crank it until it's tight...

also try halfords (unusual i know) i got a 17gallon bucket there for about £7 i think. It's really strong and my fish lived happily in it for a good few months.

Also try places like sainsburys, tesco, asda etc, as a last resort, as they sometimes have big buckets/plastic storgage boxes in homeware sections.

smile.gif Sorry kimbee,as I didn't catch that you were from the UK.We call the Rubbermaid by different names all over the world, but it seems like the guys that have answered, know exactly what I'm talking about anyway. rofl3.gif Good luck,I hope that you can find a better solution for your fish now. exactly.gif

Halfords? I didn't even think of that. There's one just down the road from me smile.gif Roughly what are the dimensions on the 17 gallon? If it can fit in my room I might just get one when I can afford it because I only managed to get about an 8 or 9 gallon. If I can get a bigger one that will fit in my VERY limited space, that should sort out the ammonia problem that I have in the new container biggrin.gif
