My apple snail lived almost 3 years with me...was getting quite big...and then I found him floating for days, he smelled so I assumed he was dead...poor guy...how long do they normally live? I was hoping he'd live a lot longer! sad.gif
Since then, I miss having my snail to watch so i bought 2 more! I love watching them move around, searching with their antennae !!

I think they have a life expectancy of around 2-3 Year's. I could be wrong, There might be some that have and are living out that. I have had my snail's for about a Year and a half now, I did lose one a few month's ago due to unknown reason's. unsure.gif I suspect my biggest snail, Gary is getting old now though, He might make it one more year if I am lucky enough! smile.gif

How long your snails live depend on quite a few factors, mainly the temperature of the enviroment. When kept at lower temps apple snail can get to be over three years old. At higher temperatures the snails are more active, but this also increases their metabolism annd shortens their life span. As a general rule you need to keep the temperature between 65-82°F, and I prefer the 70-75 range.

I'm confused. The first snail I ever bought, well, I was told it was an apple snail, but it was HUGE. He was a giant monster compared to the ones normally sold in those little containers at "Wally World."

So, was he really an apple snail? He looked like one but just bigger. I guess I'm just assuming it would take longer than three years for one to get that big. Or, do they really grow that fast?

(I had to take him back to the pet store though, because I noticed that since he was so big, he really pushed my tank into over-stock. At the time, I was a newbie and didn't realize that snails had to be added into the equation....)

"Apple snail" is a catchall term for the Pomacea genus. I've seen several species sold under that same name. The giant snails tend to be P. canaliculatas.

My bridgesii (pictured above) lived to be about 2 1/2 years old. He always lived in heated tanks so I think that really sped up his life. He grew extremely fast the first 6 months that I had him and then slowed way down.
