Full Version: One Happy Goldfish!

I made the usual mistake of having a goldfish in a way too small tank. However, today my goldfish finally moved across to his new 23 US gallon tank! He had to suffer the small tank for quite a while though so I'm waiting to see whther his growth was permanently stunted.

I was wondering if I should just leave him by himself or if there were any more fish that could be added. I realise that there isn't room for another goldfish, well, I guess they'd still have 10 gallons each, but it's a comet and I've heard 20 gallons is recommended for them.
But with him being quite small and possibly going to stay that way you can barely see him in the tank! Any recommendations for tank-mates or should I just leave him alone?

Thanks.

smile.gif Congrats on getting your new tank and moving your fish into it! I bet he is extremely happy with all the room!

I would not get anymore goldfish because like you said with him being a comet, he will need all those 23 gal as ge grows. I'm not sure how long it takes to stunt the growth of a goldfish, but I would leave him the space for the time being! You never know how big he will get, besides the fact that he is a goldfish and still produces the goldfish amount of waste.

How long has the tank been running and what type of filter do you have running in it? Don't forget to keep an eye on your water params and do your water changes! If your tank has not cycled watch the water by testing it often.

Good luck and again congrats!

Thanks for your reply. smile.gif

I have had the tank running for a while and the water parameters are looking ok now. I used some gravel and things from my old tank which seemed to speed up the process. I will keep testing regularly.

I'm planning on getting another filter very soon as my current one doesn't get through enough water per hour for this tank.

Congrats on your new tank...As a person with comets practially coming out of my eyeballs I can say this...You will hate yourself for overstocking comets...The ammonia spiking and water changes are exausting! I did a rescue which is how I ended up with 13 and knew nothing about goldfish...Boy am I learning fast!

biggrin.gif Hoorah for you and getting your fish a bigger tank.As tempting as it is,I say leave him alone in it.I know that you'll htink him lonely, but as long as you give him attention,he'll be fine. smile.gif
You're going to have to post some pics of the little guy. exactly.gif

Congrats on your new, bigger tank! Your comet will be much happier and so will you. I agree that water changes on overstocked tanks are such a chore, I have been there and done that. smile.gif
