Hi guys
This is my first post as I am new here!
I bought 2 new fish for my tank yesterday. When they first got inside, the Calico was very shy and hid away at the bottom with the plants. The other one is also a fantail (white in colour with red head but isn't an oranda). They got on fine so I thought!
This morning, I came in to find Storm (Calico) was no longer shy. However, it was biting Rogue (the white one). Storm chases her around sometimes and Rogue is very petrified of her. She used to be very lively fish but she now stays at the bottom with her top fin down anjd swims away as soon as Storm goes near her. I have now put Storm in a jar and I don't know what to do! I thought these guys were meant to be a peaceful species! They are very very similar in size, with Storm being only about half a centimetre more than Rogue.
Why do fish bite each other then? They don't really cover fish behaviour/ psychology in books!!
Any help would be really appreciated! X

Hello, and welcome to the forum. I'm new here, too.
What size is the tank you put them in? Could they have been fighting over space?
I don't think a jar, unless it is very large, is a good temporary solution. Perhaps you could find something larger to use?

first welcome they my be try to mate and if u have a heater then turn it down and a jar is not a good place u could place it in a platic box with a filter smile.gif

hey there and welcometo.jpg .
could you please answer as many of the questions below as possible.
how big are the fish?
what size tank are they in?
At what time do they bite eachother?(feeding time, when you turn on the light, all the time, ect.)
How long was the tank setup?
Do you have any other fish in the tank?

Good luck smile.gif

Hi guys
The tank is 60L, sorry I don't know what this is in gallons. It has been set up and matured for 2 weeks. It is a coldwater tank with 2 fish in at the moment- a black oranda and a red/white fantail.
The calico fantail, I have now placed in a separate tank. It is about one quarter bigger than the other two, who are getting along really well.
I just bought a book today called 'Fishlopaedia' and it has stated that fish may bite other fish to be territorial, or mistake it's movement for food, and that if it carries on and the smaller fish are stressed by this, then it may have to stay in separate tank... that would be a shame!!!

you may just have an agressive fish then, because 60 liters is enough room for 2 goldies.

I've found some of my goldfish tend to dart after eachother and squabble when they are first introduced to their new tank and will stop in a day or so. If it's not being hassled TOO awfully I would just let them get used to eachother (obviously remove the fish if it doesn't stop). Is rogue a little slow and clumsy or not?

Oh noooo I thought 60L was plenty of room! I'd better not get any more fish! At the mo I have three.
Rogue is slightly smaller than the Calico and black Oranda (Storm and Wolverine) have more rounded shape bellies and Rogue's belly is not well... really a belly! She's red cap oranda with no belly lol.
Okay well today, I placed Storm back into the aquarium. I turned off the air pump whilst I did this.
As soon as Rogue saw her, would you believe it, she swam away and hid at the bottom of the tank near the plants. She was just lying there at the bottom, I thought she looked really depressed. They behave just like humans!! Storm didn't bother her.
I put the airpump back on, then Rogue wasn't so shy anymore, she came out. I sat there and watched for 4 hours (my eyes sooo tired!!!). So far, so good. No bullying from Storm. Wolverine gets on with the both of them so I'm glad about that. Maybe Storm feels like the new fish in town and won't be bothering Rogue anymore. I'll wait and see!!! Really don't want Storm to live in isolation anymore! But she must behave herself!!!
