Can anyone give me instructions on how to raise raise brine shrimp? How big do they have to be before you feed them to the goldfish?
Thanks,
Ranchugirl
The simplest way is to get some brine shrimp/salt combo package from the petstore. They come in a 3-pack, and the salt is already mixed in with the shrimp eggs.
All you need to hatch them is a 2 liter soda bottle, cut the narrow end with the top off, fill it up with the amount of water recommended on the brine shrimp egg package, add the egg/salt combo and stick an airstone into the water. Thats it.
Depending on the temperature, the eggs start to hatch after a day or so. The warmer the water, the better. I leave mine at room temperature, which here in Central FLorida is around 75degrees. With slightly cooler water, they take a bit longer.
I keep mine on top of my aquarium light, that way they get some of the heat that the lamp gives off.....
And you can basically feed them to your fish the moment they hatch, or you can raise them to a bigger size by feeding them with liquifry food. Although I never tried that personally, since I raise mine mainly to feed my betta fry, and they have the right size for the tiny brine shrimp babies... wav.gif

I bought a package of brine shrimp eggs & there was the salt to water ratio on the package. I used coarse salt, and lukewarm water. I just mixed this in a large glass jar. Then I floated the brine shimp eggs on top of the water and placed the jar in a warm spot. Near my wood stove (since I am in frosty Canada). They hatched within 24 hours. I fed them immediately since I was feeding goldfish fry.

I used a syringe to suck them out and drained them through nylon stocking.

Good idea about the liquid fry food, Ranchugirl. Your technique sounds a little more sophisticated than mine biggrin.gif

How big do they get? I dont think Ive ever seen them before.

Touchofsky---Why did you drain them? Is there something you have to remove?

I was feeding them to tiny fry and I didn't want to put the salt water into the fry tank.

Oh okay I see now. That makes sense. smile.gif

I may know next to nothing about goldfish, but I know a little bit about brine shrimp. (emphasis heavily on the 'little'!)

Brine shimp, also known as sea monkeys, also known as artemia salina, can grow to be up to an inch long, but from what I hear they can be fed to fish newly hatched. Newly hatched brine shrimp look like little tiny dots moving with an erratic, jerky motion through the water. If you want to feed them to freshwater fish like goldfish, remember they can't live in the tank long term, as they need saltwater to survive. they'll survive long enough to get eaten, but that's about it.

Brine shrimp will thrive in staggeringly high salt levels. They naturally live in places like the Utah salt lakes, with salinity so high nothing else can survive there. (Apart from the algae they eat.)

Ranchugirls method for hatching them is pretty much the best way you'll find to hatch them. The one key which seems to be more of an issue than any other is oxygen. For brine shrimp to hatch you need lots and lots of aeration.
