Has anyone used Medi-Gold? I've been feeding it to my 65 gallon tank when Jonah and Golda were showing signs (head standing, bottom sitting) of infection, and they cleared right up, but Noah, our blind moor seem's to have gotten REALLY floaty from it!! We fed him peas and it seems to have cleared up, but now I dont know what to do. I know you need to feed medicated food for 2 weeks, but clearly if there's going to be a problem with it, I dont want to keep using it!

I haven't heard of Medigold making a fish float, Tinker, but it can be possible with an extremely sensitive fish, I guess. Have you tried breaking the food in half to reduce it in size, therefore it doesn't take as long to soak up all the water before it gets eaten? I do that with the food while I feed two rather small demekins right now - they can't swallow the big pellet.
I notice when I break it in half (its breaking really easy) that airbubbles escape while the pellet sinks. smile.gif

that's a good idea, or maybe i'll try soaking it first! its just freaking me out because he's not pineconed or gasping or anything else. no other symptoms and the water params are just 100% perfect. but this floating all over the tank thing is just plain weird, and it started with the medicated food. i'm going to fast them a day or two also to see if that helps. gave them peas tontie, and it seemed to work for an hour or so, but he's back to floating around. weird...... and i'm completely stumped.

Another thought, we added another airpump, could there be TOO much airation in the water? he seems to like the bubbles, always has, but this is just so new that i dont know what to think.

Do your fish normally eat pro-gold with no problems??

I think Medi-gold is very close to Pro-gold, except it has meds added to it. Pro gold has made my round fish float, and the Medi made the same fish float. It's not fun. I've heard a rumor that Pro and Medi use a wheat binder, and this can cause problems with some fish. I would love it if Rick would introduce a line of foods that uses a seaweed binder.

I don't think adding a single airstone is really enough to cause so much exhaustion that a fish displays sb problems. However, I think in general it's easy to have too much return-current in a tank, and then a fish can become exhausted and then floats funny. So I guess I want to say that adding an airstone could've just tipped the balance and made the fish tired . . . . . ????

There are quite a few that swear by Pro-Gold and Medi-gold. Truthfully,I use it all the time, but I have learned to feed my goldfish smaller quanities, more often.I have noticed that if I actually give them all the amount that I think they need, that my one Black Moor will start floating.So...smaller feedings can help. smile.gif
I also would suggest checking into Nitrates when anyone sees their fish begin to have those floaty problems. Some of my fish for instance, are more sensitive and will float almost immediately if my Nitrates start climbing even a little bit.
The same goes with the Medi-gold.On the occasions where I've needed to feed it,you're trying to get as much as you can into the fish two times a day,so that he can get well. When I do that,I notice constipation/floaty problems, and have learned once again if I do smaller portions and stretch it out to more feedings during the day, that I don't seem to have this problem.Rick at Goldfish Connection also mentioned that I could throw in an occasional pea,to help keep things moving. yeah.gif If you get my drift. biggrin.gif
