I got two new turtles the other day, I rescued them from living in a sink in someone's basement. The tank that I have them in now is a bit to small for them but I have to make due with what I have for now.
I have one Oranda in a 30 gallon tank with nothing else in with it. I was just wondering if I can put feeder fish like minnows and possibly some snails in with my goldfish. I really don't care if the goldfish eats the guppies or snails, I am just concerened if it's safe to add the feeder fish in with my goldfish. I will actually be using them to feed to my turtles sometimes but don't want the turtles to have too much at once because it's not good for them.

The snails should be fine in with your Oranda. I have snails in with my goldies and lots of others here do as well. As for the feeder fish, I don't have any experience with that but I can tell you what I've read...

Depending on the size of the feeder fish and the size of your Oranda, the minnows may become lunch. If your Oranda is large enough to swallow them he'll likely try. BUT the minnows are likely fast swimmers and Orandas are fairly slow, so it could work. I've seen postings were other members here have had success in keeping white clouds, which is a kind of minnow, successfully with their goldies.

That being said, I think my biggest concern would be disease. Personally, I wouldn't want to be adding feeder fish to my goldfish tank out of fear of introducing desease and parasites to my goldies. For that reason, if it were me, I'd keep a small tank strictly for the feeder fish.

well, last night, I went and got some rosey reds. I started out with 9. When I woke up this morning, I only have six... oops. I guess i better just throw them in with the turtles. I also got some little snails, I'm not sure what kind they are, but they gave me like 20 of them for free. They told me that the snails will multiply very fast. they are tiny little things, so I hope that they also get bigger. They also talked me into getting some ghost shrimp so I came home with about 10 of those also. We were getting brownn algea pretty bad and no matter how much I scraped the tank, it kept on comming so my boyfriend got a chocolate albino pleco. I told him that I wasn't sure if that was safe with my oranda, but he got him anyway. the ghost shrimp were going to town on the algea, so I'm not sure that I needed the pleco. When I woke up this morning, I didn't have any algea anymore, either. I guess we'll see what happens... but I'm going to put the rosey's in the turtle tank tonight after I clean it so George my oranda doesn't eat anymore.
