Has anyone had any experience with placing pieces of egg-shell in aquariums with soft water? Would this be feasible?

Thats an interesting idea and Im not really sure. You would have to make sure the shell was really clean or else it would rot in your tank and be gross. You could try putting crushed coral in your tank and it would do the same thing and be safer. Or try one of the reptile blocks for turtles' shells.
