I have been waiting for this picture biggrin.gif I could hardly wait to see your pond. I see that you posted it a few days ago...where have I been?!

What a great V-day present!

What is it lined with? Could I make one of those ponds with a regular barrel planter? I have never seen a pond quite like that Koko, I love it. It would look so cool on my patio, among all my plants in the summer. B)

What kind of filtration do you use?

Sorry for all my questions, I am in love with your pond, and the fish in it, I should add!!

Can you use those above the ground pond to breed GF, not Kois I know. I thought you mite could the Moors or the fantails one like that.
Ranchugirl
What a beauty, Koko!! I like the ponds in the barrels!!

Jessica, I went to our K-mart when they had a huge sale before they closed alltogether, and they had 1/2 whiskey barrels for sale, that you could use for flowers and such. And they sell a separate pond kit, with plastic liner, pump and some sort of bamboo spout where the water flows back into the water. I think it was around 60$ alltogether, and held around 40 gl, if I remember right...

Thanks Ranchugirl, I really really love Koko's pond, it would go so well in my patio garden.

I talked to my mom today actually and she told me at this one store that carries wicker furniture, garden ornaments and the like, has those barrel ponds, just like Koko's only they have a "pump handle" attached.

You know those old handles that people used way back when to pump water...well it has one of those attached, and it's actually the pump or spout or ??? I know nothing about ponds, but basically the water actually comes out of the handle back into the pond.... heeheehee I am getting really excited now.

Too bad that store is at least 3 hours away, but hey, I have to go visit my parents sometime right, I can get it on the way mwahahahahahahha!!

Thanks

Koko- It looks great! Two questions: What is your liner? (I had trouble finding a plastic liner big enough for my barrel) And what kind of filter do you have?

thanks
deb
jetman73
Koko it looks great. Are you using epdm for the liner?
HappyGoldfish
Many places sell preformed hard plastic liners that fit nicely in those 1/2 whiskey barrels. PVC liners like the ones often found in pond kits will degrade and need replacing after a couple years, so it's better to start off with right with either a hard plastic or EDPM liner. I don't like hard plastic liners for in the ground ponds, but for above ground container ponds they're great!
Black oranda
Do they cost more?
cebbsk
Happy- I cannot find a barrel liner big enough for my barrel. I currently have a 25 x 15 one but my barrel is 26 x 18. In such a small environment I want all the extra water area I can get so I am constantly on the look out for one. I think I am gonna bite the bullet and buy the rubber liner and that way I can have the perfect fit I want.

thanks
deb

Ranchugirl
Deb, your barrel pond looks very lovely!!
I am not sure about the size, but I saw a 1/2 barrel, with the hard plastic liner sold separately, at Kmart a few months back. Our Kmart closed, so I looked around there to find some bargain, which I didn't, but I did see the barrel there with the liner. I don't know how much it was or the size of it, but maybe you have one in your neighborhood to check it out. Even at nnnnnn I saw those kinds of ponds the other day...
Black oranda
Yes your berrel pond looks great!
cebbsk
Thanks! It currently houses some rosie red minnows that are very pretty fish! In the spring I would like to put one goldie in.

I have done the nnnnnn/Kmart thing. I need to keep checking. So far their barrels are the smaller variety. I actually have some mosquito fish in my backyard in a barrel I got at nnnnnn. My excuse is that I want to grow out aquarium plants but of course it is just a way to have more fish! LOL

I am going to go to a pond store to see how much the rubber liner will be. Last time I checked it was about $60. I didn't want to spend that much but since I want more water volume I just might do it.

Still waiting to hear where Koko got hers if she pops in too!
thanks again

Koko, your barrel pond is beautiful and so are your goldfish! smile.gif ! Too bad it get's so cold here, I can't make one myself, besides the fact of the hawks..eagles..otters..weasels..raccoons..and don't forget the humans! Even though I could cover it up and bring them in inside, I don't think we have any proper barrels!! I could proably buy one though...Then there's my parents.. <_<
JessicaandMarshall
It gets cold here too. I'm going to bring the fish inside in the winter biggrin.gif Now I just need to get to work on my plan heehee

Deb your barrel pond is fantastic too! I love the duck or is it a goose? =o) It really adds a nice touch!

I just love the touch of a pond to a garden, in my garden, we had clay as hard as a rock. My sister and I started digging, turning, adding peat moss, adding black earth, and sand, and planting crawling ivy and irises, now 5 years later it's perfect for growing anything, anything that grows in the shade, at least. Does anyone read Canadain Gardening? We put a small pond in, but after a small Vole, a one that lived in the garden and that we two loved dearly as much as the garden, drowned in the frog pond, we imediatly took it out!
