I'm not exactly sure where to post this but it does concern tanks so I'll aim here smile.gif

I have a question about stickers on the glass front of the tank. I don't know if other people have them and how they removed them if so. I got my tank recently as a used tank- it was used for showing fish a few times and consequently has an entry number sticker on...it also has the product name sticker under that.

I'm wary of using anything like varnish remover etc so close to my fish and wonder if anyone has a
quick tip about removing these stubborn stickers in a fish tank friendly and fish friendly way?

Hers's a pic of the stickers I want to remove. IPB Image
You can see someone (prior to my ownership) has tried to remove a sticker from the middle.
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can offer a solution.. smile.gif help.gif please.

smile.gif That is a really, really good question Trinket! I have had the problem getting stickers off of new tanks in the past. I have tried soaking them off, scaping them off and I even tried vegetable oil on a paper towel to see if it would grease it up enough to peel off. They just do not come off very easy. exactly.gif I have been afraid to use one of those razor blade scrappers because I was afraid of scratching the tank.

Hopefully someone will share what they do.

There is a product called ......uh....... GoofOff and another one - comes in a little tiny bottle at the hardware store that is specially made for dissolving the sticky stuff that sticks stickers on things. It will not hurt the fish - for it is on the OUTSIDE.

BUT:

Try taking a wet rag and setting it so that it keeps the stickers very wet. If they are plastic types, take a knife or a fork or some such implement and scratch/scrape the sticker so that you break open the plastic coating so the paper backing is exposed. Gentle scraping will not scratch your tank. You are not trying to remove the sticker - just break open the plastic covering so the paper part can absorb the water.

Then wet the sticker. Use a touch of soapy water if you can and set the cloth so that it keeps the sticker wet for a few hours. The soap is just a wetting agent - not necessary if you do not feel comfortable with it. Do not let the rag dip into the tank or it will wick water out onto the floor!

When the sticker is fully wet, you should be able to rub or scrape off all the paper and plastic portions of it. Try using a spatula - even the non-scratching ones if you prefer - to scrape off all that you can off the tank.

Now you will only have the glue yuck left on the glass. This can be removed with peanut butter. Like the vegetable oil it works to remove the sticky stuff, but, unlike the oil, it is thick and easy to work with. Run the peanut butter onto the sticky and rub. Get out that spatula again and scrape. It will come off. You can clean up the last little bit with peanut butter again. Then wipe the tank clean and shiney. No need to wash.

Ta DA! A Clean Tank! biggrin.gif

That sounds like a good recipe for success! Thanks very much daryl smile.gif . I'm going to have to print out the directions and have a go at this...peanut butter- I would never have thought of that one.

Just one more Q. How could I set the cloth in the easiest way to keep the sticker wet for a few hours..do you mean hanging a wet cloth over both sides with a laundry clip or similar- or any better way?

You could also try rubbing alcohol. This is what I use to get stickers off my pots that come from the store with those horribly placed stickers right on front! I get it wet and get off as much as I can without it then rub rub rub! biggrin.gif
