Orginally, the 10 gallons tank was set up for a Goldfish temporarily. Today, I added 3 Guppies. There is one log with several plant bulbs. One thing that I'm not happy >>> the gravels. Just doesn't look good to me. At the store, it was darker, but in the tank, it is brighter. Anyways, I'll replace the gravels for a black color.

Now, the tank was set up, but I forgot something. I treated the tank with Prime, but I failed to remember the PH... The moment they went into the water, I realized the PH was skyhigh and immediatly added Neutral Regulator and Discus Buffer. Will this hurt them? It was all within minutes. Right now, they are swimming peacefully all around. Hopefully, they are okay.

I was going to ask if I need to get some fishes from the 29 gallons tank to ease the stress for the Guppies, but they seem fine. I'm considering putting in a Dwarf Gouramis (blue) in the tank.

I totally want black gravels, when I change it, then I'll plant the red lilies.

Do Guppies have low or high bioload?

well ph can hurt fish if not changed to me 5 guppies is enogh for a ten gallon tank

Well the pH really depends. What was the pH difference of your water and the store water? What's your kH (buffers the pH)? If you added that regulator with a high kH, it may just bounce back up and cause the fish more stress. Nothing you can really do now, just hope for the best. They should be fine since guppies are pretty hardy.

Is this tank cycled?

When you change the gravel, you need to do it gradually unless you just bought the gravel you don't like. Scoop out a couple cups each day until there isn't any left, then add the new darker gravel.

I havent test the Wal*Mart water yet. I work there. smile.gif I luv taking care of the fishes at the store. Yeah, its the same AquaTech filter, its moved back to the 10 gallons. It been in two other tanks. I've never tested KH/GH in my life, cuz I could never find such testing bottles. Neutral Regulator and Discus Buffer always keep my water at 7.0. Yeah, I'm hoping the three I got is very hardy.

Just a few notes on changing the gravel:

It can be stressful for your fish. Do what you can to reduce other stressors.
Do a gravel vac right before changing the gravel, the less waste you stir up, the better. You might consider feeding a little less the day before you plan to make the change as well.
There are benneficial bacteria colonies in your gravel, so checking your water params for a few days after changing the gravel is advisable. Do not change your filter material or remove other decorations at this time.
If you decide to change the gravel all at once, remove the fish to a bucket with tank water while you do it; and do a thorough vacuming of the tank before adding the new gravel. Add the fish back, and leave the lights off the rest of the day.

As for the pH, what's done is done. For future reference, the sharp sudden changes are what is going to do the most damage. The more you can do to minimize the fluctuation, the better. In general, I would avoid using chemicals to change the pH, but if you must, do it very slowly (NO more than .5 on the scale in 24 hours).

well, good luck with the new gippies. beware, guppies multiply like crazy. i havent bought a guppie in 10 years, because i get free ones all the time lol.
Also, dont worrie too too much about them, guppies are very hearty, and easy to take care of.

I think its cool when forum members work at fish stores. If they stick it out, they can really educate people, save the lives of fish, and greatly improve the reputation of that store. Kudos to you!

I make sure my Guppies are male. Yeah, I enjoy working at Wal*Mart. I educate alot of people. Even experts have questions about this and that. You wouldn't believe how frustrated people get when I stop them from buying certain fishes and buying certain supplies/equipments. I told store managers, I dont care about the sales. I care about the customers and the information they must have.

Anyways, my three Guppies are still alive. Thankfully.

Yesterday evening, I thought that one Guppy disappeared. I couldnt find him anywhere. All the thru the night, stocking at a store, I almost bought a Guppy or two this morning, but decided to wait for another shipment. When I came home, I saw all three! biggrin.gif

Glad to hear all three are doing well. And that's really cool about making sure your customers get good information, I bet in the long run they'll really appreciate it.
