hiya~
I was wondering about this as I was thinking about doing a red theme in my fish tank are the glass stones the ones they use for the ivy plants in water safe for my tank and goldies? as i do not want to put something in my tank that isnt safe
glitterfish
I have glass shells in my tank. I use to have those flat marbles too. Glass should be fine. smile.gif
Blue
I have a glass bowl in one of my tanks smile.gif
swimminginbettas
thanxs glitterfish~
i just wanted to make sure it was safe dont like putting things in tank unless i know for sure i had to take the gravel out of my tank as my fish were constantly eatting them

hiya blue~
I just always double check everything for my fish they are like my children and want to always make sure it is safe for them

I just had a bad experience with the flat glass marbles that I have in my tanks. They are safe of course to be in the tanks but as your goldfish grow, which I have a calico oranda that has gotten huge, those marbles can fit in their mouths. Day-Zee was picking up the marbles and got one stuck in her mouth. I kept watching her and could tell she was having trouble. So I finally had to get tweezers and gently reach in her mouth and take it out. krazy.gif I was not terribly excited to do this.

So needless to say I took all the marbles out because I did not want this to happen again. My tanks are barebottom with only scattered marbles for appearence so I knew pulling them out all at once would not upset my bio load and water chemistry.

glitterfish
Eeek! That wouldnt be a good time! Day-Zee must be huge!! I had a bunch in there but none of my fish were big enough to get one stuck. I no longer have the flat marbles but large, over 1" glass shells.
swimminginbettas
ouch hmmm thats not good i wanted to get the marbles not the flat glass stones hmm i guess i will just have to go with the river stones or sumthing i'm going krazy.gif just think about what type of decor i should do
Fred Sambo

THUNDER
I am concerned about that glass bottle >>> sharp edge. Good luck.
swimminginbettas
definitely not putting anything with sharp edges in my tank as i dont want to filet my goldies let along a glass bottle only will stick with stuff that is safe for them exactly.gif
Woowoo
Both of your tanks are very pretty! I have green gravel in mine but im slowly removing it, smile.gif
swimminginbettas
woo woo they arent my tanks ohmy.gif they are Fred Sambo tanks i took the gravel out of my tank as my fish were eating the gravel
Fred Sambo
nah, the glass is actually pretty smooth from the waves at the beach, and it's been in there for several years without any trouble. goldfish are tough creatures.
invertedsilver
Just make sure the glass does not have a metailic glaze.
That can leach into the water and become toxic or flake off and can be very harmfull.
swimminginbettas
this is true that goldies are tough lil creatures my goldies i think mine have iron guts rofl3.gif and they can eat too funny even after i feed them they will go and eat my live plants they already up rooted one of my plants in the tank
Blue
I have used Japanese pebbles in my barebottom tank both black and cream ones.Heres a pic.

swimminginbettas
blue i like your tank setup smile.gif
Peaches
i just took a buffer and buffed some rocks from the lake and put them in my barebottom hospitial tank.
Woowoo
I know jillian i was saying that your tank and freds are nice tanks smile.gif

I love blue's tank!! druel.gif
SuiSui
Blue your tank reminds me of Othello (Reverse) for some obvious reason! rofl3.gif

I wouldn't really recommend glass marbles in my opinion. I had severals in my tank but a few of them broke into tiny sharp pieces. Thank goodness my fish never noticed the small parts otherwise they would've swallowed them. I prefer river stones or something similar to what Blue has in the tank. Real pretty and natural!
swimminginbettas
yeah i skipped the glass marbles i just went to AC Moore & bought 10 pounds of black river stones will be doing my tank later on tonight smile.gif i think it should be enough for my tank
SuiSui
You know what to do when you're done! Post pictures!! ^_^
swimminginbettas
yep yep i was wondering though i have bamboo stalks are they able to go into the tank with the river stones and the the fishies? if so that would be awesome and then i'm going to get a pagoda tower for the tank on monday
*(^_-)*
swimminginbettas
definitely not going with bamboo after reading the forum on it
SuiSui
I don't think bamboo isnt so bad as long as the leafs are out of the water. i wonder if some place sell fakes bamboos. I'd like to get my hands on some if there's fake ones in the market! Same goes with lillypads!
THUNDER
Those bamboos that are popular (lucky) are not true aquatic. They will rot in the water if kept under excessive waterline. Its not recommended for use in aquariums. However, there are fake bamboos, either plastic or silk, that you may consider. There was one, online, a fence of bamboo stalks (brown), but I lost the location to it. I was wanting to get several and line them up in the corner of the tank and fill up the gravels. Its like an upper layer. If anyone ever finds it, contact me or post on here. Hopefully, if someone finds it, that I'll see the info.
glitterfish
I know Trinket has that bamboo fence in one of her tanks. exactly.gif

I went with the fake real bamboo, not the lucky variety. I love it!
swimminginbettas
Can anyone recommend a site that has the fake bamboo where i can purchase it rather go with fake then with the real i mean i got lucky bamboo but way to big plus wouldnt put it in the tank as my fish like to eat everything lol
THUNDER
"Fake Real Bamboo" ? Which is it, fake or real?
