I just had a bad experience with the flat glass marbles that I have in my tanks. They are safe of course to be in the tanks but as your goldfish grow, which I have a calico oranda that has gotten huge, those marbles can fit in their mouths. Day-Zee was picking up the marbles and got one stuck in her mouth. I kept watching her and could tell she was having trouble. So I finally had to get tweezers and gently reach in her mouth and take it out.

I was not terribly excited to do this.
So needless to say I took all the marbles out because I did not want this to happen again. My tanks are barebottom with only scattered marbles for appearence so I knew pulling them out all at once would not upset my bio load and water chemistry.

Eeek! That wouldnt be a good time! Day-Zee must be huge!! I had a bunch in there but none of my fish were big enough to get one stuck. I no longer have the flat marbles but large, over 1" glass shells.

nah, the glass is actually pretty smooth from the waves at the beach, and it's been in there for several years without any trouble. goldfish are tough creatures.

Sep 23 2006, 09:00 AM
Just make sure the glass does not have a metailic glaze.
That can leach into the water and become toxic or flake off and can be very harmfull.

Sep 23 2006, 09:01 AM

Blue your tank reminds me of Othello (Reverse) for some obvious reason!

I wouldn't really recommend glass marbles in my opinion. I had severals in my tank but a few of them broke into tiny sharp pieces. Thank goodness my fish never noticed the small parts otherwise they would've swallowed them. I prefer river stones or something similar to what Blue has in the tank. Real pretty and natural!

yeah i skipped the glass marbles i just went to AC Moore & bought 10 pounds of black river stones will be doing my tank later on tonight

Sep 24 2006, 09:38 AM
I don't think bamboo isnt so bad as long as the leafs are out of the water. i wonder if some place sell fakes bamboos. I'd like to get my hands on some if there's fake ones in the market! Same goes with lillypads!
THUNDER
Sep 24 2006, 09:42 AM
Those bamboos that are popular (lucky) are not true aquatic. They will rot in the water if kept under excessive waterline. Its not recommended for use in aquariums. However, there are fake bamboos, either plastic or silk, that you may consider. There was one, online, a fence of bamboo stalks (brown), but I lost the location to it. I was wanting to get several and line them up in the corner of the tank and fill up the gravels. Its like an upper layer. If anyone ever finds it, contact me or post on here. Hopefully, if someone finds it, that I'll see the info.

I know Trinket has that bamboo fence in one of her tanks.

I went with the fake real bamboo, not the lucky variety. I love it!
