Full Version: Minimum 30 Gallons?

Few minutes ago I was going through the Animal Planet website and checked the info; given regarding all kinds of pets. I clicked on the Fancy Goldfish link and when I started reading about BlackMoore and Oranda care, I came to know that they recommend having a minimum of 30 gallons per these fish.

Here's the link...

http://animal.discovery.com/guides/fish/fr...fancyintro.html

You can click on each fish category and at the bottom of the page you'll find a summery of the max; length of these fish and the min; water requirements etc...

Everyone will have their own ideals, but we recommend an absolute minimum of 10gallons. Some people think 100gallons is required per fish. 30gallons seems a nice number, even a little small for commons/comets. It's good they are giving out good information though smile.gif

Edit: just reading through and there is no mention of filters, which may be why they recommend 30gallons. We recommend 10g + high quality filtration. With no filtration even a 30gallon seems small!

I think what they are saying is that your tank should be at least 30 gals, but not per fish. Like for the platies and guppies they show 15-20 gals, but you don't need that per fish.

it seems to be the general rule that for fancy goldfish you need a minimum of 10 gals per fish if well filtered, but be prepared to extend this.

I have 3 fancies of 2-3 inches of body length (without tail) in a 30 gallon tank, and with good filtering I can keep my tank pretty clean and stable. but realise that when they have grown larger i will have to extand my tank. I think orandas can grow up to about 12 inches.

One rule is that you need at least 24 square inches of water surface (length x width) for each 1 inch of fish body length excluding the tail, But that feels a bit on the small size.
