Full Version: Too Many Babies

My husband and I have a pond that has both koi and goldfish that we have had for a year. The fish are doing very well and we enjoy them very much.

The goldfish have produced about 15 babies that are growing quite fast. The five original goldfish (they were feeder fish bought from PetSmart) are about 5 inches long. The babies are just under 2 inches already.

Our challenge is that we now have too many goldfish for the pond and are worried that we are putting all of the fish at risk by having so many (the nitrite levels have gone up slightly, but are still in the safe range). We're also concerned that these fish will have more fry next year.

I realize I should have thought of this before we got the fish, but we did not. I love these fish and do not want anything bad to happen to them. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I can do with the babies? I'd like to find good homes for them, but am not sure how to go about it. I've asked friends and they do not want any. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

smile.gif Hi and welcome. I guess something you could look into would be contacting your local Aquarium/Fish club, etc. and maybe they could help you out with that. You can also try somewhere like freecycle, but you'll have to be careful that people are interested in pond fish and not using them for food for other pets
Hopefully between the two you'll figure something out.Good luck! smile.gif .

Hi and welcome to Koko's. smile.gif I think you may have been bitten by the 'fish bug' - it's an insidious malody that creeps up on you and there is no cure. Many of us start out with just one tank or pond but that's just the beginning.

You could try separating the males and females to prevent further breeding but that would mean another pond or tank. Good luck.

Thank you for the responses. We found a couple of people with ponds who would like a few fish and will provide them with good homes.

I have, indeed, been bitten by the fish bug. I never knew how much enjoyment you could get out of them. Just got back in from feeding my koi; they are starting to eat from my hand now.

I'm glad everything worked out fine. =)
