Substrate is a special gravel for planted tanks. It has iron and other minerals absorbed in to the gravel bits. This normally is in the bottom layer then gravel over the top of it. Then when the plants are placed in the gravel the roots will get the food that it needs. Some plants need this to survive but most of the goldfish plants don't smile.gif

Usually I hear "substrate" on fish boards to describe anything you have on the bottom of your tank. Like if someone asked me "what substrate do you have?" I'd say I have glass marbles. Someone else might have sand, that's just a different substrate.

How small does the substate have to be for freshwater plants? I am going to be setting up my tank again soon and want live plants.

Substrate? Tiny pebbles with large ones on top?
