i was wondering if snails are good for your tank. My uncle there a pest and a really bad, but i'm putting this out there so i know exactly if there good or not.

As far as I know (which isnt a heap) they are not necessary for your tank but if the numbers grow too large I think they can start to hurt your tank's plants.
I think they are OK as long as you keep the numbers of snails low.

Hope it Helped. smile.gif

They also produce a lot of waste and need 10 gallons per snail.

Hi Dave Aus,

Try to avoid ramshorn and pond snails.

I keep some pea-size apple snails in my fry tanks to hoover any uneaten food or dead brine shrimps. Always keep a watchfull eye for any dead snails since they can contaminate the water in a jiffy.

Cheers

I think my large apple snails have been a fascinating addition to my tanks. I had one female who truly had a personality, and she was best buddies with a betta in her tank. He would rub all over her and she would go lay infertile eggs, they had an inter-species love affair wink.gif
I have never had a breeding problem, I suppose I am just lucky. I don't see babies as pests since they are such a dependable food for many fish, but I have had a tank overrun once and it IS annoying.
I would say try them though, get one and see what you think. THey eat anything an no fish food goes to waste.

smile.gif I can't really say that they're actually good for your tank, but I have them in their own tank and I find them quite interesting. They move faster than what most people think of as "At a Snail's pace" too.
They really are messy though and they do have certain requirements to be kept in good condition.People are under the misconseption that you can throw an apple snail in the tank, and never see Algae again, and that's not neccessarily true.Algae is their last selection of food. They'll eat any of the fish foods that you use to feed your fish, but they also need to be fed fresh Veggies that are high in CAlcium to keep them healthy and their shells looking great.Ph must also be maintainted around the 7.4 mark.Good filtration is also a must. It is really all about what you find interesting. biggrin.gif
