Why are peas so good for your goldfish? do they give extra nutrition, protein or help them grow?
Trinket

Extra nutrition yes, help them grow yes, and since goldfishes' stomach is in fact a coiled up kind of tube the peas or veggies help smooth things along with digestion just like veggies do for humans biggrin.gif . With no veggies in their diet fish can get constipated.

Plus and the best part they usually LOVE them!

What kind of peas do you use? Frozen ones? And do you need to break them up first if your fish aren't that big before tossing them into the tank? I wonder if my fish will like them. I've tried giving them different kinds of fish foods and veggies before, but they prefer their plain ol goldfish flakes.

How should you feed peas to your goldfish? Frozen and cut up or what?
Powerdragon
thanks for that info, i'll be sure to keep the peas up 1 or 2 days a week

2 days a week sounds good. I do use frozen peas and cook them in the microwave for 30 seconds (ina small cup of water)Then I use my finger nail to chop them into teeny bits for the small fish and half for the bigger fish who usually come and suck them from my fingers.

Are sweet pees any different? I've tried feeding them to my fish, cooking and skining them, but didn't knotice any laxitive-like reaction.

Peas are mostly starch (for energy) and protein (for growth).

If you feel like having your eyes glaze over, here's a Canadian study on the potential use of peas and pea-meal in commercial aquaculture feeds as a preferable substitute for the corn, soy or wheat meal currently used in fish food. There's no mention of any laxative effect.

But if raw peas are high in magnesium (I don't know), they could have a laxative effect like Milk of Magnesia, so that might be a possibility.
