How do you iradicate snails from a tank? I have a problem with snails that hitchiked on some plants, right now they are in a tropical tank which would be fine, but that tank is going to be converted into a goldie tank for the winter as the tropicals all have new homes with my siblings. The snails are breeding like fruit flies and The population is utterly out of control. I need to get them out of the tank and the gravel, because they aren't the right kind of snail for goldfish. How can I eliminate the pests!

krazy.gif Man ,Pest snails are tough to get rid of!!!!

I have found that really good gravel vac's help to keep them from multiplying. If you take away the food source-it seems to slow their breeding down alot
Alot of water changes seem to bother them-they don't seem to like the new the higher ph new water brings,or maybe it's more the metals,Chlorine, etc.
I have to "hand pick" alot of the snails out.
Look for little globs of jelly looking blobs.Depending on type of snail, these are usually the eggs. They are often seen on plants/Ornaments,/the lower glass of the aquarium, etc.
Dosing with 0.3% salt sometimes does the trick-although there was a member who had pest snails live through that also. krazy.gif
Dosing with PP,(Pottassium Permanganate) has been known to help too.
And if all else fails, you can break the tank down.I'd pitch the gravel, wash the tank out in Bleach and water, rinse well, and then rinse even better a few more times, and start it all agin.
Good luck! Hope some of this helped. biggrin.gif

Yeah it does, I think I will try an over dose of salt, as for the eggs, I have tried to scoop most of them out but they just keep breeding theres over 100!! YIKES

Update, I dumped a whole 31oz of aqarum salt in the tank and let it sit for several hours, I also heated up the water to at least 70 they all seem dead. . . I am rinsing and running the filters to get all the salt out, I guess I will know if it worked in a few days.

poor little guys...
One interesting way I once read about to get rid of all the teeny snails is to drop into your tank a large piece of lettuce, the darker the better. Weight it down with a rock so it sinks, wait a bit, then pull it out totally covered in little snails munching on it. I did this once, gave some to some friends with aquariums, and gave the rest to my red eared slider turtle tank. They loved eating those little snails!
I love snails, but man they can get out of hand lol. Lots of fish love to eat them so that helps.

I feel bad for salting them, but I have to get the tanks ready for the goldies, If there are any that are around after I will try the lettuce thing. I did transfer some to tropical tanks so they can feast to their hearts content! thanks for the info on lettuce
