I feel like I should know the answer to this question but I need some help.

I want to buy a 150 gallon tank (or something very large) and was wondering about filters. My aunt has a 150 gallon tank and she has 3 filters on it. I know it's a good idea to have more than one in case you need to set up a hospital tank or something so I was wondering what size filter would be good for a 150 gallon tank. What if I were to have two or three filters, could they be less powerful? Thanks.

Well, with a 150 gl tank, you need filtration that turns the water volume over 10x in an hour. So, whatever filters you choose, combined they need to move 1500 gl in an hour. I have a 160 gl, and I have 3 Aquaclear 500 on them (gosh, forgot the new model #s, but its the biggest Aquaclear they make), plus a smaller Aquaclear that I can take off whenever I need a quarantine or hospital tank. Alltogether it just goes a little bit over the 1600 gl/h mark for me.

But it really depends if you want HOB (hang-on-back) filters, or rather would have something that you can't see, like the kind of filter that are housed underneath the tank in the stand. If you are looking for a filter like that, I'd recommend the Rena Filstar XP3, its the biggest in their model lineup, and get the right number of filters to again make the 1500 gl/h mark.

Its all a matter of preferance, and where you want your filters located, how easy you wonna have cleaning, and how much filter media the filters are holding. I can say that both the Aquaclear 500 and the biggest Rena Filstar XP3 both hold a huge amount of media, the XP3 is a monster of media holder. You can fit so much in there, that whenever one of my aquaclear quits, I replace it with one of the XP3's. As luck will have it, you can't kill an Aquaclear, so I think it will be a loooong time until all my Aquaclear are replaced with the Filstar... rolleyes.gif

For a 120 gallon tank would two of these filters be sufficient?

I looked in the bigger pet stores around my house and saw that they don't carry this filter in any size they have other large filters but no Rena filters. Would those filters be just as good as long as I got the right
one(s)?

Thank you
