Full Version: Hyacinths Turning Brown

The last two weeks, the hyacinths in my pond appear to be turning brown and dying. They were really blooming during July. Is it the season? I guess it's September now, and the daylight hours are getting shorter. What should I do? Should I reduce the population of the hyacinths? Interestingly, my water lilies still seem to be doing well.

mine all died over winter last year, you should bring them inside somewhere if you can. they'll dies in the cold...
Forever-Mango
Once winter or the cold comes, they tend to die off. Its a good idea to leave them in full sun or have them somewhere warm.

Oh, so it's the temperature and not so much the sun. It has been colder lately. Would they be able to live inside? What about the sun?

I think they do better in the shade anyway. Mine have been going yellow in full sun.

Do you think they would survive in a shed, or would its still be too cold?
Lozbug
i put some in a cold room and they all died lucy sad.gif

i personally don't think ti is to do with sun as much, when the water turns cold it starts to kill the plant......

idealy if you can, pup the in a green house or warm room, and keep water fresh. smile.gif

I might try a few in the goldfish tank, that stays above 18c most of the winter.

Well, I can definitely put some of the hyacinths in my 55-gallon tank, but would they survive without sun light? Otherwise, I guess I should just throw them all away and start a fresh next year.

Glad, the water lilies are hardy. smile.gif

I have the opposite problem right now, the hyacinths are thriving, and my lilly isn't. The lilly stopped producing pads, then I think George the snail mowed the rest over. rolleyes.gif

Lilys need to be in fill sun, thats probably why, you have the right environment for the hyacinths but not the lilys?
Lozbug
odd, both do well in mine.... loads of lily pads... flowers in summer, the hyacinths did well last you (spread to well and covered mot of pond) i didnt bother with them this year.
Erika
Yeah, the pond is in full sun, southern exposure. The lilly was doing AWESOME earlier, I'd have new pads and flowers every day. Now it's just gone kaput. Shame really, It was my favorite. I've since started using fertilizer tabs and liquid fertilizer for the hyacinths.

Hyacinths do no do well inside. I've tried numerous times. I even have grow lights and they all still die. Mine have all started turning brown too but my water lettuce is still out of control.
Lozbug
try in a warm greenhouse

I kept hyacynths in my betta tank for two years untill the invasion of the pest snails and they did really well, I didn't have a tank lid (my betta wasn't a jumper) so there wasn't any special lighting, so I think the warm betta water may have allowed them to thrive, so you might want to add a heater to what ever you keep them in but just my twocents.gif

I've tried to keep them over the winter inside. No luck. I just buy new ones each year.

I do have luck bringing in the taro. That I've kept in the last four winters.

I used to bring in others but it got to be such a hassle of all the containers of water with the pots in them. I now try to stick to plants that can take the winters outside.

I bring my Taro in too. I also bring in Parrot Feather, my Yellow Primrose Creeper, some type of grass, and this really cool plant my mom and dad brought me from Florida (I'm not sure what it is). I also bring in my umbrella palm which doesn't do well in the basement so it sits in my dining room. It doesn't like the artificle light too well. I bring my Canna's in but just cut them back and leave them in a dark corner for the winter.

I dont know what to tell you about your hyacinths, but mine look horrible too. I was wondering what is wrong with mine! I think the sun really took a toll on them. First the turned yellow and faded, then the leaves just went black and mushy. My water lettuce is not doing really well either. Its very yellow and grows very slow.

I think the 2 months of 110 degree weather is what did it. They get full sun all day. My lilies are thriving, but I just dont think the hyacinths and water lettuce can take it.

I added some fertilizer to my pond today so hopefully that might perk them up a bit. sad.gif

Just a side note:

If you take your hyacinths out of the pond and put them in another contatiner with miracle grow in the water and leave them for about a week they should perk up. Just make sure to rinse them very well before you put them back into the pond. This won't work if the fish have eaten all the roots but if the roots are there then they perk back up really quick.

Hey Debi, when you bring your Taro in, what do you do with it? Mine's still in the filter and I've been putting a garbage bag over it at night to try to keep it warm with the water circulating thru it. I know I'm going to have to bring it in here shortly. Do you pot yours? I have my Lizard's Tail to bring in too, anyone know what to do with it? And what about my lilly? It's a hardy.

I put one of my hyacinth in Groucho's tank about a week ago, so far it's doing really well. I'm going to add some liquid fert. to make sure, then put the rest in there. If they don't make it, oh well I guess.

My Taro is potted and I just set it in one of my troughs about 2 inches into the water. Last year I potted my Lizards Tail also. My lillie's I always just cut off and left them in the bottom of the pond and they would grow back the following spring (same with my Arrowhead). Lillies to not do well indoors during the winter. They don't like the grow lights at all.

Oh cool, that makes things soooooooooo much easier for me. I was starting to have nightmares about plants in troughs in the basement, and the cats getting into them, and lights, and refreshing the water, etc. etc. I absolutely LOVE the black magic plant... it's thriving and sooooo pretty!!!

My black one tends to turn green in the winter with the grow lights. I believe that it needs natural sunshine to keep the leaves back. Normally within a week of putting it out in the spring it will blacken up. I have to split mine before brining it inside this year. It has gotten too big for the pot that it is in.
Erika
Do you think it'd be ok without the grow lights and just sat in front of a sunny window?

It can't hurt to try. I can't do that because my cats love to eat my plants. The only one they won't bother is my umbrella palm.
Erika
LOL, I have 3 cats, 2 of them could care less (actually, one of them tries to eat plastic bags and dryer sheets!) and the 3rd will nibble once in awhile. She gets in trouble though, so she mostly stays away.

What temp do you think I should bring these plants in at? I'm kinda dreading it. sad.gif

I am actually going to start getting my basement takes filled and cycled. I normally start bringing the plants in around the end of September unless the forecast is for fairly warm nights then I may leave them out until mid October. You want to make sure and bring them in if you're going to have a frost.
