Well, I was outside waving off the cement dust from the neighbours renovations - it was flying over my fry tub and I noticed they like the sun biggrin.gif

So I thought I'd try and take a couple of pics - although they're so small the pics look a bit silly rolleyes.gif

Here's my biggest fry

IPB Image

And a couple of blurry shots of them in the sun

They seem to be enjoying the outdoor tub now and with a bit of filtration running - the water is staying a bit cleaner... Oh, what the hey - here's a pic biggrin.gif

So cute Jen. biggrin.gif So itty, bitty, tiny and just plain CUTE!! heartpump.gif
JenW
Aren't they just the tiniest? biggrin.gif

I had the day off work today and I ended up just sitting there watching them for a while - they've got loads of energy and eat like pigs so I've a feeling these guys will grow bigger much faster then my first batch biggrin.gif

heartpump.gif

Theyre so cute Jen!! I can see them just fine, the pics arent at all bad!! biggrin.gif
JenW
Thanks Erin - I thought it would be a bit ridiculous showing these pics but with the sun shining on the tub, it was the best I could do biggrin.gif

I think I have a couple of dorsal-less fry in there.... ranchus? I would be that chuffed if it were so biggrin.gif
d_golem
Chuffed you will be if got ranchus druel.gif:
OldHag
Oh fry fry... biggrin.gif I love them! You get really good pics in the sun don't you! Cute!
Trinket
Very cute. The sun will make them grow very fast! Fun if you have a selection in there.. biggrin.gif
JenW
Lol thanks guys biggrin.gif

I think as the eggs came from 4 different tanks there could be a strange mix. But I did lose about 30 in total so it could be my telescopes that come through at the end. They always seem to be the hardiest.... although i did see 2 that are growing fins without the dorsal. I would be so happy if there's a couple of baby ranchu's in there biggrin.gif
small_ranchu
They are cute heartpump.gif . You are so lucky to have them. I never have one yet.
vmlola
smile.gif Oh, how I love little babies! I'm so glad you decided to take the pics and show us. They are really cute. heartpump.gif Can't wait to see how they grow.
Devs
smilie_staub.gif Woo-Hoo!!! I think I am as excited as you! rofl3.gif They were the cutest Jen. And some are "Dorsaless" to boot....Man I can not wait to see them grow some!!! heartpump.gif
JenW
Thanks guys and Sharon, this time around I'm even more excited. I think it has something to do with not knowing who the particular parents are biggrin.gif

Eeeeek - I just have to run off as my calico ranchu is being shoved into the plants by 5 males <rushes to save her> Thud.gif
Devs
unsure.gif Well.....Anymore eggs to add to yet another tank/tub? rofl3.gif How's the Calico girl doing?
Devs
yeah.gif Update please! rofl3.gif
JenW
Lol - I think they were just trying their luck with her but no, no eggs biggrin.gif

The others are doing great and growing more each day - I will try and get some more pics this weekend. I think the tub (now that it has some sponge filtration) is doing them the world of good and I can still count about 17 fry biggrin.gif

dknygrlie4
aw! they're so tiny! that's alot of fry!
JenW
I just did a waterchange on the tub and ended up putting some of my fry into a smaller tub to take some pics and the strangest thing - there's about 3 with single tails blink.gif I don't actually have any single tailed fish biggrin.gif I think it could be a bit of a defect - but hopefully they'll do well.

I put 17 fry into the bucket for a pic and that still left about 8 fry - so roughly 25 in total. This includes my new smaller fry that I think will be orandas... or ranchus... or who knows? biggrin.gif

Here's a couple of pics I took today biggrin.gif

IPB Image

And here the pic that shows a couple of single tailed fry ohmy.gif

IPB Image

And here's the bucket with 17 of them

Oooh, so cute, I remember when mine were that tiny, seems like ages biggrin.gif I love fry! heartpump.gif
Last summer I had a couple of double tailed fry, but I couldn't make them survive. sad.gif I don't have any double tailed fish!
JenW
I love fry too biggrin.gif

I'm hoping that my single tails survive - they seem to be doing ok (I'm sorry you lost your double tails - they would have been wonderful) I think part of the enjoyment is watching them grow. I have 1 fry that I couldn't get into the bucket and he's abnormally big... He's about twice the size of my second largest and he's really fat. I must try and get a pic of him. I'm still amazed at how different their sizes are and the varying rate of growth biggrin.gif

I took a couple more pics of my 6 month old fry who are finally starting to get some size. They're now 1.5 inches in body length and have shot up since the weather warmed up some. I've gone back to twice daily feedings now their metabolism is working a bit faster..

Here's a couple of pics of them

And I just love this face

Oh no, they are adorable!!! heartpump.gif heartpump.gif Cutie, cutie.... and so on... I'm so silly! rofl3.gif
Devs
biggrin.gif They look so adorable. Now this is where having patience is so hard. rofl3.gif When Won was born,I knew for sure what he was going to look like but with your guys-who knows!! I hope they grow fast!
Those 6month fry look fantastic Jen--That 2nd pic is sooooooooo cute!!! Is that fish more white?
JenW
I know, this patience thing is killing me biggrin.gif

My second biggest is now nearly all white and the orange and black one was black to start off and is now turning orange. I think he'll end up white also because these colour stages are identical to the first 2 biggrin.gif The oldest is now turning into a true telescope - his eyes are starting to protrude so he's looking quite cute and very lemony...

With the new fry though - I'm really looking forward to seeing how these little 'mutts' turn out. I'm still trying to figure out who the one big fella belongs to. He's a good 1.2 cms now while the others are about 4 - 5 mm smaller biggrin.gif
d_golem
Hey hey Jen, what if the single-tailed ones turn out to be single-tailed ranchus?? yeah.gif Do u check if any got dorsal fins on them?
JenW
I think you could be right Riz. I took my good old magnifying glass out there and these are the ones without any dorsal. The others have tiny dorsal growth while these don't smile.gif
d_golem
If they do turn out to be single-tailed ranchu, me beri beri mucho likie uno plis! bingo.gif
Devs
rolleyes.gif Lucky you Riz....At least you live in the same country, anyway. How far are you guys away from each other by the way? rolleyes.gif Just curious. biggrin.gif
d_golem
Lets see, about 4 hours by plane rofl3.gif
JenW
Yeah, about the farthest away you can be in Australia biggrin.gif

I honestly think it's some kind of genetic issue - but only time will tell biggrin.gif
glitterfish
Aww your new fry are SO tiny!! heartpump.gif

The 6 month old ones are already beauties, can't wait to see how they turn out in the next 6! biggrin.gif
JenW
biggrin.gif I'm looking forward to it also - although they're going to outgrow their 20 gallon soon ohmy.gif Now I have to get an electrician in to give me more powerpoints - so I can set up another tank Thud.gif
Devs
rofl3.gif Your house will be lit up like a Christmas Tree!!!!! ohmy.gif Sort a like mine! jtmuch.gif rofl2.gif
Blue
Jen your babies are so cute and are growing fast.Keep those pics coming yeah.gif
Trinket
Yes pics all the way please! they are growing fast !! I love it that one fry is always a big bruiser..and those little single tails look very interesting with no dorsal...mmmm. I can't wait for them to grow and get colors. The lemony one sounds metcha cute biggrin.gif
JenW
Lol - I was going to go out and take some pics of them but it's started raining biggrin.gif
Marsha
I just saw your fry pic;s Jenw, and I loved them. They are so tiny and cute. Those 6month old babies are looking good.
Devs
ohmy.gif So where you been???????? unsure.gif I'm starting to think that you have a life after Koko's!!! rofl3.gif

How's the fishies??? biggrin.gif
JenW
Lol - just putting in some ridiculous hours at work this week blink.gif

They've grown quite a bit so will be out there this weekend with the camera. I've lost another 6 so have about 19 left now....
jen626
Jen! I haven't been on hardly at all lately so I hadn't seen this! New babies, and SO CUTE! Your 6 mothers look great too, those fry are lucky to have you as a mum. And wow, even the possibility of single tailed ranchus...that is definitely cause for a dancing banana! banana.gif
JenW
Thanks Jen biggrin.gif I did a waterchange when I got home from work and took more pics but photobucket are doing some site maintenance so have to wait to upload them.

I had to pull another 3 dead little guys out today and thought what am I doing wrong? I think it's a lack of aeration. I have 2 airpumps connected to a couple of sponge filters but as the temp's a steady 24, I needed to increase the oxygen. So I raced off to get another pump Thud.gif and set up an airstone and now there's quite a bit of water agitation. I really want to try and hang on to the remaining 16 and see how they turn out...

The strangest thing is several (which doesn't auger well) have whitish growths around the gill area and this is the first sign that all isn't well. I don't know what it means but hopefully the additional air will help them. They've been quite sluggish sad.gif

Ah well, only time will tell what will happen but at least they're in excellent heated, filtered and well aerated water now smile.gif
Trinket
You are doing all you possibly can. so manypeople seem to end up with only a couple of fry....it seems to be very hard even with a perfect set up. Wishing your remaing babies will thrive heartpump.gif .

I envy you, spring/summer just starting up over there smile.gif
JenW
Thanks Imogen biggrin.gif I wonder if there's any data on the survival rate of fry? I'm a bit worried now because before they die, their gills swell and become white and I found about another 5 tonight the same thing. I pulled another 3 out today so the numbers are dwindling. I'd be that happy if 3 or 4 pulled through smile.gif

And spring is finally here although the evenings are still very cool. Almost time to pull the old t-shirts out biggrin.gif
JenW
Just thought i'd update on my fry. Well all the dorsal-less fellas are gone - I think it may have had something to do with the breeding between my ranchu and my redcap oranda blink.gif I don't think their anatomy could handle that kind of pressure...

I still have 13 fry left and I think there may be a couple of orandas in there - but am still not sure.

I moved them inside into a 14 gallon hospital tank and set up a cycled hangon filter and airstone - this way I can at least watch them. I tried to get some clear pics of them but I ended up transferring 50% of the tub's water and 50% fresh so the water is too murky to see them properly. I will do daily 25% waterchanges until the water clears so i'll be able to see them better then.

Please excuse the blurry pics but thought i'd post a couple anyhow biggrin.gif

heartpump.gif They're so sweet and chubby!!! Tis a shame that you've lost so many Jen,but in the long run we know it's for the best.Survival of the fittest of course. You have to post the other babies too.I imagine that they're getting pretty big. exactly.gif
JenW
Oh yeah biggrin.gif My older guys are now in a bigger tank and their energy has increased. They still swim and float together and it's like they're joined at the hip - very endearing but they're loving their new home biggrin.gif

I think I may lose a couple more of my new guys because they're looking small and thin (like the little moor I lost way back when) but if I end up with 10, then i'd be happy - it really is survival of the fittest ...
Trinket
They keep getting cuter and cuter heartpump.gif It looks like you have a variety anyway..I am sorry about the ranchumix but I can see some of those babies do look different shapes...I wonder...could tehre be another mix there? You have done sooo well to keep these many so healthy. Lovely pics, thanks for sharing biggrin.gif .
JenW
Thanks Imogen biggrin.gif I think there were more varieties to begin with but i'm not sure who what will be the prominent mix blink.gif

I just removed another one so there's an even 12 how - ah well...

OldHag
Adorable little ones, i hope they'll make it!
JenW
Well... this weeks update. I have 11 fry left - 2 of my smaller ones passed away and there's now only 2 tiny ones and 9 larger fry left. Hopefully the smaller ones will do well because they look different to the others. There's a couple that look like they may be orandas but i'm still not sure.

I took a few pics today to show how they're growing biggrin.gif
