I was browsing websites the other day, looking for some info on lighting spectrums suitable for aquariums, when I stubled across a nice little project...

Here's the link,

I may have a go at this myself after Christmas.

I hope "Chuck" doesn't mind me linking to his page, but it's too good to pass up!

That is a fascinating idea!!! I have bought a purple *moon* bulb for my turtoise tank at night, its a heating light, but it does not give off any bright light, it looks like the moon is shining, and doesnt bother Sasha at all. I wondered if there could be something like that for the fish as well, where I could see them, but they dont feel like there is a bright light shining into their tank and disturbing their sleep.
I let my handy hubby have a look at the link, and see if he is able to tinker it together! Thanks! wav.gif

Let me know how you and hubby get on with that Andrea - if it works well, I'll try it, but the blue LEDs are about 10 times more expensive over here, even though the reds are dirt-cheap!

Scientists have long believed that the ability to perceive UV light is virtually non-existent in vertebrate life forms. However, ants, bees, flies, spiders and other insect-like creatures possess that ability. Now, researchers have discovered UV-absorbing cone cells in a vertebrate, the Japanese dace fish, that enables the fish to see wavelengths down to 360 nm. They have also determined that carp and common goldfish are able to perceive ultraviolet light too.

Does anyone else think a "night-light" is a bad idea?

Its a nice idea but I dont really see why you'd want any light on your tank at night! They dont have eyelids and they need to sleep! At night I sleep with the TV on so I cover all my tanks with heavy blankets or towels to make sure they can sleep. If they cant, they can get very stressed out. If youve ever noticed, during the day, when your fish want to sleep, they will go lay at the bottom in the shade of a plant or something. They dont want a light shining on them. gldfshkpr thank you for that info and I couldnt agree with you more.

I never thought of it that way! Thanks Goldfishkeeper, for that info! (....note to myself - go find some other handy-dandy project.... biggrin.gif )

Speaking of nightlights..who needs it..I can see in the dark with my nocternal eyes... I am not kidding! I can't see like the day, but I never bump into anything in the night when I walk. Okay, does anyone have those laser things that go in aquariums? I don't but I do stick all these glow in the dark stars on all sides of my aquarium sometimes at night, in looks really cool as you drift off to sleep with the warm soothing lullaby of that filter running... biggrin.gif

I guess it's ok if you want to watch them in the dark, but yeah they probably want to sleep too.

My room is pitch black at night and i can't see a thing. Maybe a lil nightlight over my tank wouldn't hurt. Just something to highlight my tank. So that my fish would have some "moon light" over them...kinda romantic... rofl3.gif

wow, this might solve my light problem that my fishes are having!!

but I am lousy with electrical appliances.. if someone have got this up, I will appreciate some step by step procedural instruction with picture.. erm, kind of demanding, but seriously, the description from that webpage isn't sufficient to boost my confident to try it out.. perhaps due to my previous bad experiences where my experiment cost me the power box of my house.. that was quite expensive to repair and got a bad scolding and nagging from my parents tongue.gif

thanks you

Thank you for this link! There's a guy that is selling these plans on Ebay for like 25 dollars. The only difference is he wants you to add a dimmer to it to simulate the phases of the moon. Thanks so much for the link!
