i was soo excited to see 2 half moons in the petstore today but decided to wait until tuesday(today)because if you buy one fish you get a second of the same for free. i was thinking maybe it wouldnt be included but it was.
heres the half moon. his fins are a little torn but it is a rare occasion to see this in the petstore(b/c i never had before) so i had to get him plus hes all white except for some blue tint to his fins but ive wanted an all white one for a while.)he was 9.99 he will heal like my crown tail(his was split down to the base but in just 2 weeks he is almost fully healed) anyway here he is i need a name for him.
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j260/ash...newfish0044.jpghttp://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j260/ash...newfish0039.jpgheres the free one he was flareing and since my other ones wont flare i got him. i need a name for him too.

Does it have a white spot at the vent? If so its a female. It does have the longer fins of a male but breeding throws up some masculine females

ill check to see if it has a white spot brb. nope no white spot it must be a boy. can anyone think of names? thanks

Very pretty fish, both of them. Lovely shimmery scales. I'd call them Shimmer and Glitter.
Can you put some dark paper behind the container next time you take a photo?
The anal fin on the first one looks pointy so you might have a super delta instead of a halfmoon.

Exactly my thoughts. The outer caudal rays are also shorter making the edges look rounded so yeah, might not be a halfmoon.

Here is an old pic of my halfmoon who is no longer with us but he doesnt have a pointed bottom anal fin. Its really when they are flaring can you really tell the difference.

That's a super delta, sands

note the angle of the spread is not 180 degrees and the staggered outer caudal rays that made the edges look rounded

It sorta has to be a real capital "D" and the anal fin on the bottom has to feed seamlessly into it... so they breed them a little rounded rather than the natural point.
The shop probably didn't know the difference.
Love the aubergine colouring on that one!

Well I never... I got him as a halfmoon, im shocked, but now looking at him i realise youre right and he doesnt have the D expected.
Well, you learn something new every day

Sandy came up with a good suggestions of Rainbow for one of the the names. How about naming one Rainbow and the other Cloud? That would make it easier for you to remember.
as for what kind they are. The first one may also be a veiltail. her is a pic
http://bettysplendens.com/articles/page.imp?articleid=763here is a pic of a halfmoon
http://bettysplendens.com/articles/page.imp?articleid=758here is a pic of a super delta
http://bettysplendens.com/articles/page.imp?articleid=759here is a crowntail
http://bettysplendens.com/articles/page.imp?articleid=943I think it is just a different type of veiltail

Nah, it's not a veiltail. VT and (some) CT only have secondary branching, meaning each caudal ray only branched out once, where a super delta or a halfmoon will have tertiary or even quarternary branching, meaning branching out twice or even thrice.
So, yeah, ilovefish's first fish is definitely not a VT.

I don't think it is a halfmoon either. What ever it is it is a beauty. I have friend that knows betta types well . I will see if she can identify it. I sent her a message with the pic. She should be able to identify it. She breeds bettas.

the second one is a veiltail and the petstore said the first one it was a halfmoon. grrr i hate when they do things like that. the first one i will name cloud. it was all white and then today it has some black on the tail od you think maybe it is healing from amonia burn? here are some better pics of both of them.
heres rainbow
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j260/ash...newfish0038.jpghttp://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j260/ash...terpics0020.jpgand heres cloud(i put a mirror up to get him to flare and then he was acting all bad trying to "attack" rainbow b/c there tanks are right next to his(even tough he is half rainbows size hehe)

It is disappointing when a fish you have turns out to be not the type you thought. He is a really pretty fish whatever he is, though a veil he isnt.

That second bunch of pics is a lot better of Cloud. You may be right. you could not see his tail that well in the first bunch of pics you had. But it does look like a half moon now that I see the other pics. you are one lucky girl. you usually don't find hm at lfs

Aug 30 2006, 09:08 AM
thanks i should have snached up the second one but he looked bad and i dont know if he would make it or not the best part was that he was really 10 dollers but i really got him for the price of a regular b/c i got the other one free.
